    Students in Grimsby have heard the story of a Jewish woman who survived the Holocaust.

    Janine Webber, who is Polish, shared her experiences of the Nazi occupation of her country with students at Franklin College.

    It was organised by the Holocaust Educational Trust and Janine says it's important the Holocaust is remembered so lessons are learned.

    Furniture retailer Multiyork has made more than 100 staff redundant, as the administrator continues efforts to find a buyer for the company.

    The firm, which has a store in Beverley, collapsed last month, blaming difficult trading conditions.

    Nearly 500 other employees will remain with the business for now.

    The first residents have moved in to the 86 new council houses on Hull's Orchard Park.

    Ninety one more homes will be finished by December 2018.

    The council says it has built 210 homes this year.

  6. Rawcliffe Bridge closure extendedpublished at 15:55 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2017

    The temporary closure of the bridge at Rawcliffe Bridge has been extended until further notice.

    The road was due to reopen next Monday after being closed for specialist inspection works.

    East Riding of Yorkshire Council says the inspection revealed public safety issues which have to be resolved before the road is reopened.

    Councillors have approved the building of nearly 1,500 homes on the outskirts of Bridlington.

    A spokesman for the East Riding of Yorkshire Council has said the homes will be built over many years allowing services such as doctors' surgeries and other infrastructure to gear up to cope with the extra demand.

    The M180 has been reopened after an accident earlier.

    It involved one car which left the westbound carriageway between the Barnetby Top and Scawby junctions.

    There are still delays in the area.

    Memorable moments of life in Hull from the past 80 years are being brought to life with a new DVD out in time for Christmas.

    "Hull on Film" has been produced by the Yorkshire Film Archive and will also feature the voice of Hull documentary filmmaker Sean McAllister, who was behind Hull 2017's "Made in Hull" ceremony at the start of the year.

    The film includes rare archive footage including the Wilberforce monument being moved in the 1930s and colourful royal visits.

    The final lecture in Hull's City of Culture series 'BP's Cultural Visions' is taking place tomorrow evening with the chief executive of the Science Museum Group Ian Blatchford giving the talk.

    Mr Blatchford has been responsible for London's Science Museum for the last seven years.

    The lecture series has featured prominent speakers during the City of Culture year and aimed to celebrate innovation and spark cultural conversations.

    The event takes place at 18:30 tomorrow at the University of Hull, and places can be booked on the Hull 2017, external website.

  11. Moped pair targeting mobile phone users on Hull streetspublished at 14:38 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2017

    Thieves riding a moped have been targeting people in a part of Hull by snatching mobile phones from their hands.

    Humberside Police said there had been a number of attacks reported between 7 and 9 December on Newland Avenue and Cottingham Avenue.

    Police said the reports vary but most say that two men, one wearing a red striped jacket and red helmet on a moped, mounted the pavement and were trying to snatch people’s mobile phones from their hands.

    Council staff are protesting outside the Guildhall in Hull today because they say it could cost them to use their own vehicles for work.

    Essential car users are currently entitled to a free council parking space during working hours.

    The union Unison says that's under threat and adds that using public transport isn't feasible for some staff.

  13. Upcoming budget could mean further transformation of Hull city centrepublished at 13:47 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2017

    The renovation work in Hull city centre could be extended to include more areas.

    It's among the proposed projects included in the council's budget for the next two years, which will go before cabinet on Monday.

    Parts of the city centre have been completely transformed by the public realm works and the council now hopes to extend that project to include the area around the new Hull Venue.

    There are also proposals to renovate Queen's Gardens and the city's Marina Lock Gates. A Park and Ride scheme is also being explored.

    The air ambulance has landed at Barnetby Top after a vehicle left the westbound carriageway.

    There's concern about the future of Scunthorpe's Toys 'R' Us store.

    Earlier this month the retailer confirmed it will close at least 26 stores in the UK next spring putting around 800 jobs at risk

    The firm said it wanted to focus on smaller interactive stores and online shopping.

    North Lincolnshire Council leader Rob Waltham says the situation is driven by the fact the company has a US parent making decisions and it highlights the need to encourage local businesses.

  17. Alzheimer's Society honours work of volunteer aged 15published at 12:08 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2017

    A 15-year-old volunteer from North Lincolnshire has been described as an inspiration after winning a national award.

    The Alzheimer's Society honoured Kian Borg-Jackson at the Dementia Friendly Awards for his dedication to helping people with the condition.

    Kian (pictured below) won the Young Persons Contribution of the Year category and received the award from actor Richard McCourt.

  18. Beverley's Tourist Information Centre gets new homepublished at 11:36 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2017

    Beverley's Tourist Information Centre will be based at the Treasure House in the town from the New Year.

    The current base on Butcher Row will close this Saturday.

    The council says the new localtion will "benefit from being in one of the town’s most recognisable cultural buildings".

    The Treasure House is already home to Beverley’s library and the Beverley Art Gallery.

  19. Youngsters can design flower bed for Sewerby Hallpublished at 11:22 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2017

    School children from the East Riding of Yorkshire can now enter a competition to design a flower bed at Grade I listed Sewerby Hall and Gardens.

    The theme of this year's competition is the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) and the deadline for children to submit their design is 31 March 2018.
