    There's concern food bills could go up when the UK leaves the European Union.

    A report by the Hull and Goole Port Health Authority says they may have to foot the bill for increased inspections as food enters the country.

    This could mean increased costs for importers which may then be passed on to the consumer.

  2. Petition to protect Hull breastfeeding servicepublished at 10:17 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2017

    A petition is to be handed to Hull City Council urging the authority not to cut funding to a breastfeeding support service.

    The council says it would rather not have to find savings in the public health budget and is trying to minimise the effects.

    People involved in the scheme say it's helped thousands of women and has made a big difference to their lives.

  3. Decision expected over 1,500 hew homes in Bridlingtonpublished at 09:49 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2017

    Nearly 1,500 new homes could be built on the outskirts of Bridlington if plans are approved later.

    Most of the new homes would have two or three bedrooms.

    But there are concerns the town's health services and primary schools might not cope with the new developments.

    The NHS hasn't objected to the plans and officials in Beverley say extra primary school places will be funded by developers.

    Hull City Council is calling on the government to slow down the pace of funding cuts.

    The local authority says the cuts are putting a squeeze on its ability to provide services, adding that by 2020 it will have seen a cut of more than 55% in its core funding.

    The council's chief executive, Matt Jukes, is warning the situation cannot continue and says the government should slow the pace of funding cuts for all councils over the next two years.

    Just under a third of teenagers from Yorkshire and the Humber are going to university, according to new figures from the admissions service UCAS.

    Entry rates for the region are slightly lower than the national average of 33.3 per cent.

    The figures suggest a school leaver's chances of going to university depend heavily on where they live, with the south west of England having the lowest entry rates.

  11. City of Culture volunteers get official recognitionpublished at 17:02 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2017

    The City of Culture volunteers are being officially recognised by the city of Hull in a series of ceremonies this week.

    Each of the 2,500 volunteers will receive a corporate common seal of the city from the Lord Mayor of Hull. The first of six ceremonies took place today (see picture below).

    Hull City Council says the volunteers have delivered 300,000 hours of volunteering, equivalent to 34 years.

  12. Deadline for steelworkers' pension scheme extendedpublished at 16:45 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2017

    The deadline for former and current British Steel workers in Scunthorpe to choose their pension scheme has been extended to 22 December, external.

    The original retirement fund is being replaced by two new plans - to help secure the future of the business. But both new schemes are less generous than what was offered previously.

    Members are still advised to send their decision form back as soon as possible and to not be caught out by the Christmas post.

    Major roadworks taking place in Bridlington town centre could go on for another year before they are finished.

    That's according to the head of Bridlington Renaissance, the partnership overseeing the project.

    The delays have been put down to unexpected engineering problems but traders in the town centre say the upheaval is lasting far too long.

    Bridlington Renaissance has offered its apologies for the length of time the works are taking.

  14. Appeal to find missing Hull teenagerpublished at 15:45 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2017

    Officers are trying to find 15-year-old Kasey Herron from Hull.

    Kasey was last seen yesterday around 20:30 on Wexford Avenue in the city.

    She's described as 5ft 4ins tall, of slim build and with short black hair.

  15. BAE hopeful Qatar deal is good news for Brough sitepublished at 14:54 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2017

    BAE Systems believes Qatar signing a contract to buy aircraft made in Lancashire is an encouraging sign for the company's East Yorkshire factory.

    Qatar has also stated its intent to buy Hawk aircraft made at Brough - where 400 jobs are due to go.

    The deal's still not signed, but it would keep some staff in their jobs for another year.

    BAE Systems announced in October it was planning to cut almost 2,000 jobs in military, maritime and intelligence services as it looked to re-structure nationally.

  16. Homlessness campaign underway in North East Lincolnshirepublished at 14:00 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2017

    With Christmas just two weeks away, people in Grimsby and Cleethorpes are being asked to open up their spare rooms, garages or even sheds to help rough sleepers over the festive period.

    The campaign is being led by Steven Allenby, who used to sleep rough himself.

    He says the number of homeless people has increased dramatically in the last few months and the local shelter cannot cope.

  17. Two new nature reserves approved in north Lincolnshirepublished at 13:27 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2017

    North Lincolnshire Council has dedicated land at Elsham and Belton as Local Nature Reserves

    It's hoped this will help protect animal habitats, as well as create space for important plants to grow.

    The council says it's on track to reach its target of two hectares of Local Nature Reserve per 1,000 people by 2018. The national target is to create one hectare per 1,000 people.

    The state-of-the-art events complex "Hull Venue" is a step closer to opening today.

    Major construction work on the £36m building's now been completed ahead of a grand opening next year.

    It's hoped the 3,500 capacity centre will play a key part in creating a cultural legacy from Hull 2017

  19. Two charged for Halloween mask robberypublished at 12:45 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2017

    Two men charged with a burglary at a jewellers in Beverley have now been charged in connection with an armed robbery at Lloyds bank in Hull.

    The Newland Avenue branch was robbed last month by two men wearing Halloween masks.

    A few days later Hugh Rice Jewellers was broken into.

    Ian Billany (39) and Lee Rose (37), both previously of Morpeth Street,, externalHull, will appear before magistrates next week.
