    Beverley's Kyle Edmund has pulled out of the Auckland Open because of an ankle strain, a week before the start of the Australian Open.

    The British number two had been due to play Chung Hyeon of South Korea on Tuesday.

    Edmund hurt his right ankle during the deciding set of his quarter-final defeat by Grigor Dimitrov at last week's Brisbane International.

    The 22-year-old will continue to have the injury assessed before the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the year.

    Siemens Gamesa say installing a wind turbine blade in the centre of Hull fulfilled its vision of becoming an active member of the city's business community.

    It's been a year since one of their wind turbine blades appeared in Hull's Queen Victoria Square, where it stayed until March as part of the City of Culture year.

    The 75m wind turbine blade was the first installation of the City of Culture's Look Up series. It made headlines around the world.

    Now it's hoped the blade will get a permanent home at the company's factory on Hedon Road.

    It will cost £10.5k to fix the clock on Grimsby Minster.

  4. Sport: Grimsby Town team newspublished at 12:35 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2018

    Grimsby Town have completed the signing of Derby County striker Charles Vernam on loan until the end of the season.

    The 21- year-old is a former Scunthorpe United trainee and played under Mariners manager Russell Slade on loan at Coventry.

    Vernam is set to be available for this weekend's game against Newport County.

    Meanwhile one player who might not be returning to Grimsby Town is midfielder Jamey Osbourne.

    He's currently into a second month on loan at Solihull Moors, and Russell Slade admits the situation is currently unclear.

  5. Fifty million trees to create a new forestpublished at 12:09 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2018

    A special "northern forest" is being created along the M62, external between Liverpool and Hull.

    It'll take 25 years to plant all 50m trees and will mean more people can go walking in the woods as well as protecting wildlife such as the red squirrel.

    The Woodland Trust say planting more trees will improve air quality, reduce flood risks and help wildlife to thrive.

    The government has promised £5.7m funding for the project.

    She was taken ill in Waitrose in Willerby on Friday 29 December at about 13:30 and treated at Hull Royal Infirmary.

    But she later discharged herself from hospital without finishing her treatment and now police are trying to trace her to make sure she is safe and well.

    The woman is described as being in her 40s, around 5' 3" with long blonde hair in a ponytail.

  8. Leakiest water pipe to be fixedpublished at 11:17 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2018

    Yorkshire Water say work to fix one of Yorkshire's most prone to burst pipes will start this week.

    The water main on Burnby Lane in Pocklington has burst 27 times in the last five years, leaving people living nearby without water.

    The work will begin on Wednesday and take around four weeks.

    Burnby Lane will be closed to through traffic and a diversion will be in place along Wold Road.

    There will also be traffic lights in place at the junction of Percy Road, New Street and Burnby Lane for two weeks.

    It happened at the Willerby Business Park on 8 November between 06:15 and 07:15.

    The cards were used to make contactless payments in Hull.

    Officers are asking anyone with any information to contact them on the 101 number.

    At the end of last year a homeless charity criticised the public for giving money, food and clothing to the rough sleepers who were camping under the canopy in Hull city centre.

    Hull Homeless and Rootless Project (HARP) claimed "people choosing to live like this are making small fortunes from passers-by".

    HARP also called on the council to issue prohibition orders to clear groups of homeless people off the street.

    Last week the leader of Hull City Council, Stephen Brady told the BBC that transforming Albion Square was the top of his priority list for this year.

    The multi-million pound plans involve creating a new ice arena, shops and housing.

    A major road linking Hessle and Anlaby will be closed to traffic from today until March.

    It's part of £22m flood prevention work which will protect thousands of homes.

    Part of Beverley Road in Anlaby will be closed from the junction of Lowfield Road towards Darley's Roundabout - where the houses begin.

    A diversion will be in place via Boothferry Road.

    Another rail strike has started across East Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire.

    Around half of Northern trains in the area have been cancelled today because of strike action.

    Members of the RMT union are walking out in a long running row over driver-only trains.

    There'll be more disruption with further strike action on Wednesday and Friday.

    More than 500,000 people visited Ferens Art Gallery in Hull last year.

    That's an increase of 309% compared with 2014.

    The venue opened nearly a year ago following a £5.2m refurbishment.

    It's hosted a number of exhibitions including the Turner Prize and figures show it was the second most visited Turner Prize outside of London.

    The Mayor of Crowle has told the BBC that the town council tax precept will have to go up or services will need to be cut to make up for the money stolen by former town clerk Katy Fowler.

    Fowler was sentenced to eight months in prison for stealing more than £23,000 during a four-year period.

    Coun Deborah Middleton said that colleagues have been left sickened and angry that someone in a trusted position abused their power.

    She also said that the criminality of Fowler's actions will have a lasting effect on the community.

    The case will carry on and we will try to reclaim some of the money back. We are making every effort to get the money back through insurance and money Katy Fowler already has. Unfortunately the insurance premiums will go up and so will the council tax precept as a result.

    Hull has been named as having on of the fastest growing economies in Yorkshire, according to a recent report.

    The UK Powerhouse study, produced by Irwin Mitchell and the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) found that that Hull, Rotherham and Wakefield are the fastest growing economies in Yorkshire.

    The study follows figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) which shows Hull’s gross value added growth rose by five per cent, well above the regional and national average.
