    The Ferens Art Gallery in Hull will close temporarily between Monday 22 and Friday 26 January to reinstate its permanent collection which was moved to allow for Turner Prize 2017 exhibition.

    The Turner Prize in Hull was attended by more than 116,000 visitors.

    Lubaina Himid became the oldest winner of the Turner Prize, and the first black woman to pick up the art award.

    The 63-year-old Zanzibar-born, Preston-based artist won the £25,000 prize for work addressing racial politics and the legacy of slavery.

  4. Gang attack woman on mobility scooterpublished at 11:44 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2018

    A gang of youths attacked a woman on a mobility scooter in Hull, police have revealed.

    The gang confronted the woman, 64, and tried to drag her from her scooter while kicking and hitting her.

    It happened on Endyke Lane around 18:30 on 6 January.

    Police released the details of the incident today.

    The woman, who was also verbally abused, suffered bruising to her cheeks and legs.

    A new sculpture is being installed in the middle of a Willerby roundabout today.

    A tall viking ship and weather vane is being put at the roundabout at the junction of Kingston Road and Gorton Road.

    It'll be unveiled to the public in full on Saturday 13 January 2018.

    A famous second-hand bookshop in Beverley is closing down.

    The Beverley Old Bookshop on Dyer Lane will shut in March when owners Hettie and Colin Tatman (pictured) retire.

    They've tried for nine months to find a buyer for the second-hand book business, without success.

  8. Rail strikes hit Northern services todaypublished at 06:57 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2018

    Fresh strikes are expected to cause more disruption for rail passengers in the latest 24-hour walkout over safety.

    RMT union members at Northern, South Western Railway, Merseyrail and Great Anglia are taking action for the third time in less than a week.

    The union says scrapping guards and introducing driver-only operated trains risks passenger safety.

    But the rail companies have insisted the move is safe and already widely used.

    The organisation that will take over the running of the Goole Academy has been confirmed as the Delta Academies Trust.

    It follows the collapse of the Wakefield Academies Trust (WCAT) back in September.

    WCAT asked the Department for Education to find a new sponsor for all of its 21 academies, saying it didn't have the capacity to improve the schools it ran.

    The Delta Trust, which runs 43 academies, will now meet with parents to talk about how they plan to make rapid improvements in the school.

    An East Yorkshire woman has been reunited with her engagement ring a year after losing it during a Civil War re-enactment.

    Debbie Newton was on her way home to Rawcliffe after playing an artillery officer in Buckinghamshire, when she realised her ring had gone.

    As reported by The Express, Mrs Newton failed to find the ring a month later in September 2016, but tried again in December 2017 with a metal detector.

    The 61-year-old said she was "totally amazed" by the find in Newport Pagnell.

    "The metal detector made a sound, so we dug up a large bit of earth and broke it down," she said.

    "We got down to a very small piece of earth and thought it was a bottle top, but it was my ring."

    Mrs Newton said the discovery was "unbelievable", especially as the ring was in "perfect condition".

    During the two-hour search, along with her husband, John, and their metal detectorist friend, they also found 51p in change, part of a necklace and "many bottle tops".

  13. Wildlife is being killed by hare courserspublished at 15:04 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2018

    During the last two months there have been over 200 cases of hare coursing, external reported to the police in this area.

    Around 150 of those were in East Yorkshire and the remaining 50 in northern Lincolnshire.

    Hare coursing is when a hare is chased and caught by dogs. Bets are often placed on which dog will make the kill.

    Last week an operation by Humberside Police caught a number of men suspected of hare coursing in the Preston area of Holderness.

    Police say anyone caught hare coursing could be fined up to £5,000.

    As BBC Radio Humberside says a final farewell to medium wave, radio enthusiast and listener Richard Broadley spoke to me about his love of the wireless.

    With over 200 radios, the pensioner from Elstronwick near Burton Pidsea says despite his collection he thinks the switch-off is a good thing and it's time to move on.

    The MW transmitter was turned off at 12:00 today, marking the end of an era.

    The BBC say fewer people were listening to the frequency and were switching to alternatives like FM, digital, online and Freeview.

  16. The areas where house prices rose fastest in 2017published at 13:54 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2018

    North East Lincolnshire saw the highest rise in house prices in our area over the last year, according to figures from the Halifax.

    North Lincolnshire saw an increase of 3.7%, the East Riding of 3.3% and Hull saw a price rise of 3.1% in the last 12 months.

    The Halifax says homeowners in the East Midlands and Wales saw the value of their properties rise faster than anywhere else in the UK last year.

    Four areas which still have lower prices than a decade ago are the north of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

    In the Yorkshire and Humber region, first time buyers are thought to be about 29 and have a deposit of about £18,675.

    A61 Swindon Lane in both directions blocked due to accident between Dunkeswick Lane and A658 (Buttersyke Bar). Affecting traffic between Harewood and Pannal.

    There's also delays on:

    A64 Westbound at Stockton-on-the-Forest traffic is heavier than normal at Towthorpe/Moor Lane junction.

    A1079 Hull Road at Wilberfoss. There are long delays in the roadworks area. Long Lane is closed due to water works.

    Four people have been released under investigation after a police raid on a travellers' site in Brigg.

    Earlier this week officers made a number of arrests, one in connection with modern day slavery offences, another on suspicion of money laundering and two on suspicion of growing and supplying drugs.

    The University of Hull is among institutions aiming to cut its plastic waste.

    It's as the government unveils long term plans to protect the environment and cut plastic waste within 25 years.

    The university will stop using plastic straws and will use recyclable ones instead.

    It also says it will be introducing more measures to reduce the plastic they use.

    The moves are also being welcomed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust which says we all have a part to play in keeping our beaches and marine environments free from plastics.
