1. Steel union welcomes EU exemption from US tariffspublished at 16:54 Greenwich Mean Time 22 March 2018

    The union which represents steelworkers in Scunthorpe has welcomed the news that the EU will be exempt from tariffs which have been imposed by President Trump.

    A senior US official told a Senate panel that Mr Trump had decided to "pause" the import duties while further discussions took place.

    The tariffs, of 25% on steel and 10% on aluminium, are due to come into effect on Friday and there had been concerns that it could have hit the Scunthorpe steel industry.

    However, Roy Rickhuss, General Secretary of the Community union, says while the exemption is welcome, "it's only part of the solution":

    The RSPCA says it has been working with Humberside Police following a raid on a vet's clinic and kennels in North East Lincolnshire.

    The charity says a "large number" of animals were removed from the 4 Paws site in South Killingholme this afternoon.

    Humberside Police says the investigation is continuing and can't give any more details at present.

    A community group which has taken over the running of Grimsby Ice Rink is to get £10,000 funding from the council.

    The cash boost is part of North East Lincolnshire Council's Strong Communities Fund which was established in 2017.

    The ice rink was saved from closure last year by the community group after the council said it was too expensive to run.

    Patients at hospitals in Greater Lincolnshire are still dying at a higher than expected rate, according to new figures.

    Both the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals Trust (NLAG) and United Lincolnshire Hospital Trust (ULHT) have again been highlighted for having higher death rates than expected in data published by the NHS, external.

    Both trusts were previously investigated for their high death rates in 2013 and were put into special measures for a second time last year.

    In a statement,ULHT said it reviews all deaths: "This review looks at resources, the accuracy of data being recorded, as well as understanding if there were any failings in the care being delivered and share lessons learned."

    NLAG said it, too, has recently introduced new measures which should improve the quality of care for their patients.

    There are fears that maintenance staff, cleaners and porters at Bridlington Hospital could lose their NHS conditions of service, according to UNISON officials.

    The York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is planning moving the management of the maintenance of its hospitals, including Bridlington, into a separate company.

    A 120 staff at Bridlington would be affected.

    The Trust said the new company would still be owned by the NHS and said staff will be consulted in due course.

    A project uncovering Beverley's shipbuilding heritage has been awarded lottery funding.

    The East Riding Archives wants to tell the story of the trawler builders Cook, Welton & Gemmell, which opened in 1883 and by the 1950s employed 650 people in the town.

    It says it will use the £30,000 funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to preserve the company archive and bring Beverley's maritime history to a wider audience.

    Police are currently investigating an animal rescue organisation in North East Lincolnshire.

    Humberside Police says its officers, along with the RSPCA, are in attendance at the site in Killingholme.

    New clinics for women who have lost a baby have been introduced in northern Lincolnshire.

    The sessions are being run at Scunthorpe and Grimsby hospitals for women who have suffered a miscarriage, neo-natal death or stillbirth.

    They are being run by the region's first bereavement midwife, Nick Kerry, who says: "The whole aim is to provide a bespoke package of care to support these women both physically and emotionally, as well as their families."

    Three Yorkshire Councils are in discussions about the future of a bus service which has been described as a "lifeline" for rural communities.

    The East Yorkshire Motor Service (EYMS) number 18 bus, which runs through Bubwith from Market Weighton to York, is due to stop running on 5 May.

    EYMS says it is no longer commercially viable, but will be rerouting another service as an alternative.

    East Riding of Yorkshire Council, along with North Yorkshire County Council and City of York Council say they are looking at ways to save the service.

    A meeting is due to be held in Bubwith later over the future of the route.

    The noisy road surface on the A180 in North East Lincolnshire has been a source of annoyance for drivers and people living nearby for many years.

    The Cleethorpes MP Martin Vickers says Highways England has confirmed that £10m has been allocated to repair and replace the road, with work starting later this year.

    Mr Vickers said:

    “I am delighted that a commitment to replace the concrete surface has finally been made. The current surface is a nuisance to drivers but more importantly local residents who have to constantly put up with the noise of heavy traffic driving on the concrete road.”

    “The new surface will, I am assured, be long-life whilst far less noisy than the current surface. This will be of great relief to resident who have put up with this road for long enough.”

    Humberside Police still "requires improvement" according to the latest report from the police watchdog.

    The report, by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Service, looked at the effectiveness of the force, from keeping vulnerable people safe to tackling serious and organised crime.

    The report highlights improvements made at the force and its rating has been upgraded from "inadequate" in the previous report, to "requires improvement."

    The Humberside Police and Crime Commisisoner Keith Hunter said:

    "I am pleased the inspectors have recognised many of the improvements taking place within Humberside Police and the positive effect that is starting to be felt in our communities."

    The chief executive of EMAS, Richard French said it has been a particularly hard winter across the whole sector and the service is continuing to make progress to improve response times.
