  14. Fishing communities' 'lingering doubts' - Cleethorpes MPpublished at 13:08 British Summer Time 3 May 2018

Fishing communities still have "lingering doubts" over the government's commitment to them, the Conservative MP for Cleethorpes has said.

Martin Vickers MP has urged ministers against further Brexit concessions and asked for "absolute assurance" about the government's approach during Commons questions to the Department for Exiting the European Union.

The UK will effectively remain subject to the EU's Common Fisheries Policy during the 21-month transition after Britain leaves in March 2019, which prompted MPs to voice concerns.

Fishermen had wanted the UK to regain full control over its waters immediately after the country formally leaves the EU.

But it was suggested in negotiations that EU fishers could have access to the UK's waters in exchange for a free trade deal with the UK, something the UK fishing industry has called "absurd".

Responding to Mr Vickers, Brexit Minister Steve Baker said the government "fully understands and recognises" the importance of fishing.

    Quote Message

I very much look forward to my colleagues on this side of the House perhaps one day standing here as fisheries ministers themselves operating our own independent fishing policy."
