1. Volunteers to bring Beverley's maritime history to lifepublished at 15:15 British Summer Time 2 May 2018

    Former shipbuilders Cook, Welton and Gemmell were based in Beverley from 1901 to 1963.

    They built trawlers and smaller ships and employed 650 people in their shipyard on Grovehill.

    The firm closed in 1963 and now East Riding Archive is looking for volunteers to help archive plans for hundreds of ships.

    They've been given a £30,000 grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund and are looking for 40 volunteers who want to learn about Beverley's maritime history and pick up new skills.

    Scunthorpe United are celebrating reaching the League One play-offs with two award nominations for their interim manager and captain.

    Nick Daws is in contention to become League One manager of the month, external and Rory McArdle is among the nominees for player of the month.

    The winners will be announced on Friday morning.

  3. Thousands respond to A63 cycling ban proposalspublished at 14:25 British Summer Time 2 May 2018

    Highways England has received more than 10,000 responses to a proposal to ban cyclists from the A63.

    The road attracts top cyclists as it's regarded as the fastest time trial route in the country.

    The proposal to ban them comes after police raised safety concerns following a number of accidents.

    Cycling campaigners say a ban wouldn't be justified.

    Highways England said an announcement would be made before the autumn outlining the decision.

    Consultations will take place with key groups.

    Thomas Voeckler, who won the Tour de Yorkshire in 2016, is visiting Howden along with Welcome to Yorkshire chief Sir Gary Verity and race director Christian Prudhomme.

    They're seeing how preparations for the annual cycle race, external are going.

    Voeckler is attending this year's race in an ambassadorial role.

    Serge Pauwels, last year's winner, will be back to defend his title this year when the race begins in Beverley on Thursday.

    People in Hedon have raised concerns after their post office has failed to reopen after closing a few weeks ago.

    Villagers were told the closure was for a refurbishment but are concerned they haven't been given any further information.

    The Post Office said the closure was temporary and it remained committed to providing services in the area.

    There are calls for a statue to be erected in the memory of a former Hull FC player who was awarded Britain's highest military honour during World War One.

    Jack Harrison won the Victoria Cross after he was killed trying to save his men from machine gun fire during the battle of Oppy Wood in 1917.

    More than 300 men from the East Yorkshire Regiment died in the battle.

    Harrison is still the record try scorer for Hull FC.

    East Yorkshire's Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), which runs health services in the county, says recent changes to services need time to "bed in".

    The East Riding CCG made a number of changes to care centres in April, including a change to the opening hours of the centre in Withernsea.

    Beverley and Holderness Conservative MP Graham Stuart said constituents had reported difficulties in getting appointments and confusion over the new opening hours.

    But the CCG says it will be three months before they decide if any changes need to be made.

    Scunthorpe has been named as the second most polluted town in the UK.

    The town is on a list of 47 places in the UK where air pollution breaks the limits or is at the limit set by the World Health Organisation (WHO), external.

    The WHO data shows 32 areas, including Hull, have fine particle air pollution levels above 10 micrograms per cubic meter, with the remaining 15 at the limit.

    Dirty air can cause debilitating diseases and hasten death.

    Former Hull FC captain and Featherstone Rovers player Charlie Stone has died, it's been announced.

    Pontefract-born Stone played for seven years for the Black and Whites, having signed from Featherstone, and he was part of the 1978-79 "Invincibles" team.

    He won several trophies during his time with the club, including the 1982 Challenge Cup in Hull's replay win over Widnes.

    Scunthorpe United are still on course for promotion to the Championship after securing a place in the play-offs with a game to play.

    Just two points and a single place separated the two teams going into the clash, but the two goals proved the difference in a game the hosts dominated.

    Bankside, one of the busiest routes in Hull, is going to be closed for another month while flood defence work continues there, the Environment Agency has said.

    The area was suppose to reopen this month after the agency had carried out improvements there as part of a £36m River Hull defences project.

    It means there will continue to be no access from Innovation Drive to Air Street until June.

    The Environment Agency says the recent weather conditions have affected progress.

    The Ferens Art Gallery is one of five finalists up for the Art Fund Museum of The Year award.

    The winner, which will be announced in July, will receive £100,000 in prize money.
