    East Riding of Yorkshire Archives is looking for volunteers to help sort archive material from a former local shipbuilders.

    Cook, Welton and Gemmell was based in Beverley from 1901 to 1963 and built trawlers and smaller ships.

    Sam Bartle, from East Riding Archives, says he hopes to give people a chance to pick up new skills and learn a huge amount about the maritime history of Beverley.

    The boss of the company which owns the Yorkshire Post has resigned from his post for "family reasons", it's been announced.

    Johnston Press, which also runs titles such as The Scotsman, says Ashley Highfield has agreed with the board that he won't put himself up for re-election next month.

    In a statement, the publisher says: "Ashley is leaving for family reasons and in order to fulfill his plans to transition to be a 'plural' non-executive director as the next phase of his career."

    Mr Highfield, who formerly worked at the BBC, has been at the helm of Johnston Press since 2011 and spearheaded the acquisition of the i newspaper.

    Johnston Press chairman Camilla Rhodes said: "I would like to thank Ashley for his significant contribution. We're sorry he felt his personal circumstances required a change at this time."

  3. Villagers 'devastated' by axing of bus servicepublished at 08:29 British Summer Time 1 May 2018

    Residents of an East Yorkshire village say the axing of their direct bus service to Hull from next Sunday will have a devastating effect on the community.

    East Yorkshire Motor Services say they are withdrawing from the route which runs to Aldbrough, near Withernsea, and a number of others, for financial reasons.

    East Riding of Yorkshire Council says it's done its best to mitigate the effects of the cuts by subsidising alternative buses, but it, too, has tight financial constraints.

    Meanwhile, Aldbrough Parish Council says it' looking for solutions and is "working with local taxi firms and operators in the area to try and run a service":

  4. Tour de Yorkshire: Final countdownpublished at 17:38 British Summer Time 30 April 2018

    The final countdown has started for this year's Tour de Yorkshire which starts on Thursday.

    Organisers say some of the biggest names in cycling will be tackling the course.

    Villages and towns have been getting ready.

    Day one starts in Beverley and winds its way 180 km to Doncaster.

    Day two starts in Barnsley and ends in Ilkely.

    It's Richmond for the start of day three, finishing in Scarborough.

    Day four is the longest race day with 189.5 km from Halifax to Leeds. Full route details here, external.

    A collection of Marionette puppets owned by two brothers from Cleethorpes are going on sale at auction.

    The Lazarus brothers who are 89 and a 91-years-old are retiring after 60 years in the business.

    The auction is taking place in Scunthorpe tomorrow.

    Grimsby Town manager Michael Jolley (pictured below) is being hailed by supporters after helping the club avoid relegation at the weekend.

    Supporters invaded the pitch at Blundell Park to celebrate Saturday's 2-1 win home over Notts County which ensures the Mariners will be playing league football again next season.

    Some fans joked afterwards that Jolley may not have to buy a drink in the town again after saving the club from relegation.

  9. Volunteers sought for maritime projectpublished at 16:11 British Summer Time 30 April 2018

    Volunteers are wanted for a new project that will delve into the East Riding's maritime history.

    "Trawling Through Time" will look at Beverley’s former shipbuilders, Cook, Welton and Gemmell.

    The company was founded in Hull in 1883 before moving to Beverley in 1901/2.

    The volunteers will help to catalogue and preserve digital copies of trawler plans from the company.

    East Riding Council wants people who've worked in the maritime industry or have a great passion for the sector.

    A Grimsby man's appeared in court charged with attempted murder.

    Daniel Woodroffe, aged 26, of Eleanor Street appeared at Grimsby Magistrates' Court following an attack earlier this month.

    He's been remanded in custody and will appear at Hull Crown Court on Wednesday 2 May.

  11. 30 fans due in court over violence at Mariners' gamepublished at 15:16 British Summer Time 30 April 2018

    Thirty football fans are expected to be dealt with at Hull Crown Court this week following violent behaviour at a football match almost two years ago.

    The men were involved in disordely conduct following a Grimsby Town match against Sheffield United in July 2016.

    The court hearings involve supporters of both teams and will be taking place during the week.

    A Grimsby Town fan has been banned from attending the club's football matches for the next five years.

    Kevin Ashworth, aged 44, (pictured above) of Hainton Avenue, Grimsby, admitted disorderly behaviour at a match against Notts County in December last year.

    He's also been fined £300 and banned from being in Grimsby and Cleethorpes town centres in the hours before and after the Mariners' games.

    The leader of Hull City Council says there'll be a summit to look at the issues of homelessness and anti-social behaviour in the city.

    Drugs use in the city centre, rough sleepers and begging have all become issues in recent weeks.

    Councillor Stephen Brady told Radio Humberside people's lives shouldn't be disrupted by anti social behaviour and a number of organisations will come together to try and tackle the issue.

    It will involve Hull Business Improvement District, Humberside Police, health authorities and homeless charities.

  15. Woman dialled 999 more than 700 timespublished at 13:52 British Summer Time 30 April 2018

    A woman who called 999 more than 700 times has been ordered to pay £2,000 in compensation to the East Midlands Ambulance Service, which serves several areas including Lincolnshire.

    Almost 100 calls were made to the ambulance service on Christmas Day alone.

    The caller, who hasn't been named, has been sentenced to a 12-month community order and will receive mental health treatment.

  16. Tour de Yorkshire to attract cycling's big namespublished at 13:30 British Summer Time 30 April 2018

    It's not long before the Tour de Yorkshire gets under way and organisers say some of the biggest names in cycling are due to compete in the race.

    Villages along the route have been getting ready for the event which starts in Beverley on Thursday.

    Organisers say cyclists including Mark Cavendish, Olympic road champion Greg Van Avermaet and Rio 2016 track gold medallist Owain Doull will help bring crowds to the event.

    The race will finish on Sunday 6 May.

  18. Hollywood star's fishing jumper gets East Yorkshire homepublished at 12:35 British Summer Time 30 April 2018

    A Hollywood actor who called on the expertise of two women from Flamborough has donated his father's fishing jumper to their growing museum.

    Lesley Berry and Marion Adams were asked to repair a gansey, a woollen jumper worn by fishermen, belonging to Daniel Day Lewis' dad so the famous actor could wear it in his latest film Phantom Thread.

    The jumper is now on show in the seaside town.

    Their story will also feature on a BBC One documentary tonight at 19:30 called Art and The Sea.

  19. Man suffers serious injuries in Cleethorpes crashpublished at 11:45 British Summer Time 30 April 2018

    A man suffered potentially life-threatening injuries after a crash in Cleethorpes on Friday night.

    Taylor's Avenue was closed after two cars collided head on.

    The driver of the second car was taken to Grimsby's Diana Princess of Wales Hospital. Her injuries are not believed to be serious.

    The un-named man who suffered serious injuries was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary.
