    The University of Hull say their largest ever cohort of nursing graduates will provide a boost to the NHS.

    The majority of the nurses have already been taken on by the local health services.

    Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust has already offered jobs to 144 student nurses who are graduating this year.

    Yorkshire and the Humber is the second most dangerous region in the UK for vulnerable road users in HGV collisions, with the South East being the most dangerous.

    The figures come from charity Roadpeace, external, who say many lorries on our roads are not fit for purpose - due to blind spots and a lack of safety features.

    They want drivers, councils and companies to sign up to CLOCS - a scheme which tackles the issue by ensuring vehicles are safer and also responsibly driven.

    The A1079 at Market Weighton remains closed after a lorry overturned.

    It's believed the lorry was carrying pigs and some diesel has spilled onto the road.

    Hull council leaders are to travel to London today for a meeting which could pave the way for a multi-million pound boost to the city.

    Senior officials are to meet with Northern Powerhouse Minister Jake Berry to outline their ideas, with the hope of securing a City Deal for the area.

    If successful the local authority will push ahead with plans to build a cruise terminal and help develop a tech corridor along the banks of the River Hull.

    The 2018 Tour de Yorkshire boosted the county’s economy by £98m, according to research released this morning.

    The study, commissioned by Welcome to Yorkshire, shows more than two and a half million spectators lined the route over the four days of action in May.

    In Beverley, which hosted the start of Stage 1, cafe owners told the survey that it had been the busiest day of the year for them.

    The figures show 79% of the spectators were from Yorkshire, while 21% came from other parts of the UK and abroad.

  8. Bus service cut to Bridlington could 'damage tourism'published at 08:28 British Summer Time 10 July 2018

    The reduction of a popular bus service to Bridlington will disadvantage elderly people wanting to visit the resort, according to Bridlington's tourism association.

    The Coastliner bus service, which runs from Leeds to Bridlington,is being cut from three daily buses to just one.

    The association has appealed to the operators to think again, but it's believed they have been battling rising operating costs.

    Almost 130 new doctors are set to graduate from the Hull York medical school next week.

    They'll be joined by 238 new nurses at the University of Hull.

    It's 10 years since the first students graduated at the medical school, taking the total number of doctors trained there to 1,400.

    The number of nurses graduating from the university this year is their largest ever number.

    A North East Lincolnshire by-election will be held for the Freshney ward in the borough following the resignation of a local councillor.

    The election will take place on July 26 after Labour councillor Ray Sutton stood down.

    Mr Sutton resigned from his seat at the end of May as he is moving out of the borough to be closer to family.

    The ward will remain a Labour seat until the by-election is held.

    Police are in the Albany Street area of Hull, following reports of three men carrying a weapon.

    Officers have been stopping and searching people but say so far no weapon has been found and no-one has been arrested.

    Extra police are patrolling the area to reassure people and Humberside Police say they don't believe there is a threat to the wider public.

    A virus normally seen during the winter months has led to temporary ward closures at Hull Royal Infirmary.

    Wards 11 and 110 have been closed to new admissions due to the Norovirus vomiting bug and further bays have been closed on ward 31 at the Queen's Centre, Castle Hill Hospital.

    Hull Royal Infirmary saw A&E attendances top 500 in a single day last week.

    Visitors are being asked only to visit the affected wards time if absolutely necessary.
