  5. Access to some NHS services could be limited by cashpublished at 19:48 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

County councillors fear people will lose the chance of IVF treatment and potentially life-changing scans if the NHS attempts to cut £29m from its budget.

According to a report presented to Kent County Council, four clinical commissioning groups in east Kent want to reduce IVF treatment from two cycles to one, while GPs may cut access to MRI scans for conditions such as arthritis, fractures and sports injuries.

Medical staff in community hospitals and GPs will no longer be able to prescribe gluten free biscuits, cereal, flours and pasta.

Dartford, Gravesham and Swanley CCG and Swale CCG are facing a £13.5m shortfall in their budgets.

    Quote Message

I don't see how the CCGs can get rid of their deficit and fulfil their commitments to transform the service without a detriment to patients. This is despite the good work that is being done but I think that financial recovery would just be a bit too far."

  7. Calls for improving emergency call handling in Surreypublished at 18:41 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

    Rebecca Curley
    Local Democracy Reporter

Reporting crime to the police 101 phone number needs "sharpening up", Surrey's crime chief has been told.

One victim had to wait for days before police responded to his call about a common assault and another resident called their local councillor when they could not get through to 101 looking for help.

Surrey Police and Crime Commissioner David Munro has now been asked to look into how call operators deal with non-urgent and emergency calls.

The same room of phone operators deal with 999 and 101 calls at the force call centre in Guilford and it can take around one minute and 40 seconds on average for a call to be answered.

At a Police and Crime Panel meeting on Thursday, councillor Margaret Cooksey from Mole Valley District Council said there was so much "chatter" people had to go through when they first call 101 and get a recorded message, she was worried some were putting the phone down without reporting the crime.

The Police and Crime Commissioner said the number of 999 calls received at the call centre was much smaller than the number of 101 calls and stressed it was a "very slick system".

David Vincent, 50, of Wagtail Way, Orpington; David Vincent, 26, of Barnfield Road, Orpington; and John Baker, 36, of Eltham High Street, rang on the 60-year-old's door and told him he had pigeons in his home, Kent Police said.

They told him his roof needed to be replaced and he handed over a total of £6,000 to them.

When he made a insurance claim, the company advised him to contact the police and the three men were arrested.

Vincent senior was jailed for 21 months, and Vincent junior and Baker were sent to prison for 18 months following a hearing at Maidstone Crown Court.
