After more than five hours of discussion in public, plus more deliberation behind closed doors, Brighton and Hove’s licensing panel is still to reach a decision on whether to renew Uber’s licence.
The taxi booking app has been used more than a million times in the city since it launched with a Brighton licence in 2016 – but has drawn criticism from some in the local taxi trade.
During Monday’s meeting, they complained Uber drivers were sleeping in their vehicles, coming from out of the area to pick up work, and hadn’t done enough for disabled passengers.
Uber admitted it had no wheelchair accessible vehicles (local rules say it doesn’t need any until it operates 100 vehicles in Brighton), but said its drivers were getting training to help disabled people.
It said it hadn’t broken any rules, and was doing more than required to work with the council – blocking drivers from London picking up work on the coast, for example.
Following the discussion, three councillors on the licensing panel said they needed longer to consider the matter before reaching a decision.
They’ve promised to tell us what they decide “as soon as possible” following a further, private, meeting later this week.
Quote MessageFollowing the licensing panel meeting, the decision on the renewal of Uber Britannia Ltd’s Private Hire Operator Licence has been delayed. Given the scope and number of representations made to the panel, councillors have decided to take further time to give careful and detailed consideration to the matter, to ensure the right decision is made. The panel will reconvene later this week and we will announce the decision on the renewal of the licence as soon as possible following that meeting.
