The RSPCA has rescued six kittens found "dumped like rubbish" in a cardboard box at a nature reserve in Rochester.

The tabby cats were left in a lawnmower box at Ranscombe Farm nature reserve on Tuesday and had no food or bedding with them.

Although they seemed to be physically well they were riddled with fleas and worms.

It is thought the kittens, five females and a male, are only six to eight weeks old.

  15. Council leader hits back at claimspublished at 20:24 British Summer Time 26 April 2018

    Rebecca Curley
    Local Democracy Reporter

The leader of Surrey County Council has denied the county's missing out on millions of pounds raised through buying up business properties.

David Hodge was responding to claims by opposition members of the authority.

Surrey County Council has generated income of £3.9m from the purchase of warehouses, cinemas and retail units outside the county.

Speaking at a cabinet member, councillor Hodge said that money is being spent on front line services.

    Quote Message

Let's just clarify the point that some of our members on the opposition don't understand that the money being raised with our investment processes are actually being used for frontline services. I'm hoping that the members who are in the building and in the room today will really understand that and not ask the question again."

Cllr David Hodge, Leader, Surrey County Council

  17. Camberley roadworks to cost an extra £600,000published at 19:32 British Summer Time 26 April 2018

    Rebecca Curley
    Local Democracy Reporter

Major roadworks at a heavily congested junction will cost an extra £600,000 and be carried out overnight, Surrey County Council says.

The Meadows gyratory system improvements in Camberley, originally forecast to cost £5m, will now cost an extra £646,000 because of delays caused by the M3 smart motorway scheme and a decision to carry out the work outside of peak hours.

Cabinet will confirm on 1 May who the contract is being awarded to and has timetabled works to begin on 1 June, with a completion target of 12 months.

At a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, councillor Colin Kemp, member for highways, said: "This work is vital to the local area. This will not only improve local journey times to local residents, it will support economic growth for local businesses for the future."

  19. Baby sprayed in face during robberypublished at 18:02 British Summer Time 26 April 2018

    Bob Dale
    BBC Live reporter

A man and a baby have been sprayed in the face with an unknown substance during a burglary.

It happened at a house in Timperley Gardens, Redhill, around 20:50 BST last night.

It's thought the attacker called at the property answering an advert offering a mobile phone for sale.

After spraying the occupants, he escaped with the phone.

He was of medium build, wearing glasses, black jeans and trainers and a green top, and carrying a silver rucksack.

Both the man and the child were treated in hospital, with the baby kept in overnight as a precaution.

    Quote Message

This is an incident we are taking extremely seriously given the intent shown by the attacker in using a spray. Fortunately this has not caused any immediate harm to the victims, although we are continuing to test what the substance is."
