  13. Call for bars to close earlierpublished at 19:46 British Summer Time 7 August 2018

    Sarah Booker-Lewis
    Local Democracy Reporter

Drinkers, drug users and related criminal and anti-social behaviour have prompted a review of licensing rules for the centre of Hove.

Conservative councillor Andrew Wealls said: "There is a concentration of anti-social behaviour and alcohol and substance misuse related disturbance in a number of roads in central Hove".

He set out the problems and a call for action in a letter to Brighton and Hove City Council's Licensing Committee urging them committee to include their ward, Central Hove, in the council's "special stress area" - the name for a zone where new alcohol licences are subject to greater scrutiny.

Any business applying for a new licence would have to show that it had robust plans to ensure that it would not add to the area's problems.

A public consultation is asking whether the closing time of cafe bars should be moved from 23:30 to earlier in the evening.

  14. Council job losses at Tandridge District Councilpublished at 18:41 British Summer Time 7 August 2018

    Rebecca Curley
    Local Democracy Reporter

Tandridge District Council has begun consultation with 105 members of staff at risk of redundancy as part of its "radical transformation programme".

There will be 96 positions available as the restructuring takes place so only a handful are likely to lose their jobs.

The borough council is hoping to encourage as many people as possible to access its services online.

The restructure will include a "locality services team" which will "work closely with residents, ward councillors, parishes and the voluntary sector, resolving local issues and enabling communities to be more resilient", the council said.

It comes after 66 members of staff were put at risk of redundancy in an earlier phase of the transformation. This resulted in seven people being made compulsorily redundant and another six opting for retirement or to leave the council voluntarily.

    Dean Kilpatrick
    Local Democracy Reporter

The total number of sick days taken by staff at an NHS trust providing mental health and social care services in Kent has topped 50,000 for the first time in six years, new data has revealed.

Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust (KMPT) recorded 53,536 "full-time equivalent days lost to sickness (including non-working days)" in 2017-18, compared to 47,127 in the previous year.

NHS Digital's data showed the rate of absence stood at 4.95% - the highest since the statistic was first recorded in 2009-10, and higher than the most-recent national rate of 4.51%.

A trust spokesman said: "Working in mental health is incredibly rewarding [but] it can also prove to be stressful and it is important we ensure support is available for our staff."

Meanwhile, Medway NHS Foundation Trust recorded 55,304 "full-time equivalent days lost to sickness (including non-working days)" - its lowest since 2013-14.

James Devine, deputy chief executive, said: "Line managers across the trust receive sickness absence management training, which helps them support colleagues who are absent due to illness."
