The scheme would include a hotel, restaurants and shops

A plan has been put forward to save Brighton's iconic Madeira Terrace and turn its crumbling Victorian arches into an "internationally renowned" beachfront development with a hotel, restaurants and shops.

It's the idea of private company Boxpark, which is behind similar schemes in Croydon and Shoreditch.

Brighton resident and company founder Roger Wade said plans had been submitted to the city council and the company was hoping for a 12-month "exclusivity" period to explore the opportunities.

In a statement, Brighton and Hove City Council said it was aware of the proposals and needed to look at proposed finances as well as the potential heritage and environmental impact of the scheme.

The council said: "We also need to be mindful of other interested parties such as English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund, who both have an interest in important historical structures.

"No exclusivity deal has been agreed. Such a move would have to be approved by councillors based on a detailed assessment of the proposals."

  13. Calls for more pothole fundingpublished at 20:56 British Summer Time 6 August 2018

A car driving over a pothole

Potholes have led one councillor to call on the government for a fairer way of looking at how it dishes out money for road repairs.

Cllr Edward Hawkins says the state of Surrey's roads are awful but a wider approach at looking at how cash is distributed is needed.

He says Surrey has the third highest traffic movement in the country, but because it has fewer roads in terms of miles compared to other counties, such as Hampshire and Devon, it is given less money.

And now he is trying to drum up support for a debate in Parliament on the formula used to determine this.

The Conservative Surrey county councillor for Parkside in Surrey Heath has started a petition and needs 10,000 signatures to get the issue debated in the House of Commons.

He has just under 7,000 signatures and is determined to get more.

The Government's Transport Committee has just launched an inquiry into the funding and governance of roads because of "potholes plaguing the country".

The committee is gathering evidence on condition of roads, economic and social costs of not maintaining them and the regional distribution of local roads funding.

Surrey County Council has dedicated £20m into road repairs this year.

  16. Crawley council ward boundary changespublished at 19:47 British Summer Time 6 August 2018

    Karen Dunn
    Local Democracy Reporter

The number of Crawley Borough councillors will drop from 37 to 36 if proposed changes to the electoral boundaries come into effect next May.

The Local Government Boundary Commission is in the process of carrying out a review which would see changes to a number of the town's current wards.

Residents have until 13 August to take part in a public consultation.

Crawley's boundary review is one of 39 being carried out across the country, so each councillor will represent approximately the same number of electors.

Crawley last underwent an electoral review in 2002, when the number of councillors was increased from 32 to 37, and the number of wards from 13 to 15. If the proposed changes go ahead, the number of wards will go back to 13, 10 of which will be represented by three councillors and three by two councillors.

The loss of one councillor could have interesting consequences for Crawley's political landscape.
