    Quote Message

When you see something like this happening to a new young MP who's made a real influence in politics, a real impact in politics, well you just think this is a terrible part of the way that a democracy has to work. We are exposed, we are at risk and when something like this happens it draws the whole political family together regardless of political persuasion, in shock but also in I think just wanting to express love best wishes prayers to her and her family.

Former deputy prime minister Nick Clegg, a long-time friend of the Batley and Spen MP Jo Cox has been reacting to the news she has been attacked in Birstall near Leeds.

He said his thoughts are with her and her family, friends and colleagues:

"I am deeply shocked as someone who knows Jo. She is a lovely decent person, full of goodwill to everybody. My heart goes out to her and everybody affected.

"But also it is such a vile affront to our democracy. One of the great things about our democracy is that anybody can just wander in and see their MP in their weekly surgeries.

"That violence against Jo, although that is the most important thing... is also violence against our democratic values and very proud democratic traditions."

  20. At the scene: Eyewitness account from Birstallpublished at 15:49 British Summer Time 16 June 2016

    BBC Radio Leeds

We've just had this eyewitness account of the attack on Batley and Spen Labour MP Jo Cox in Birstall this afternoon from Hichem Ben Abdallah:

Ben told us he saw a "river of people running down the road, screaming and running towards the scene".

He saw a white man of medium height, wearing a baseball cap and grey clothes who was hitting Mrs Cox.

He then saw a man trying to restrain the man who was hitting the MP. Then the man wearing a baseball cap pulled a gun out of his bag and pointed it at Jo and fired two shots.
