    A local cafe owner Clarke Rothwell saw what happened. He said she thought Jo Cox had been shot and stabbed.

    Football fans gathering at Millennium Square in Leeds found their attention diverted as an ambulance sped past guided by an unmarked police car.

    Lots of fans had gathered at the city centre venue preparing to watch the England versus Wales clash in the Euro 2016 competition. 

    Few of those assembled could have known that Batley and Spen Labour MP Jo Cox had been shot in an attack in Birstall by a man who had confronted the MP.

    At the nearby Leeds General Infirmary, six armed police officers now stand guard near the Jubilee Wing.

    The car park near the ambulance bays is busy with police vehicles, with additional security now on-site to advise members of the public attempting to park nearby.

    With the news that Jo Cox is in a critical condition in Leeds General Infirmary after being attacked in Birstall, here are a few key details about the Batley and Spen Labour MP:

    • Mrs Cox, 41, has been in Parliament for little over a year
    • She's married with two children  
    • She graduated from Cambridge University in 1995
    • She went on to be head of policy for Oxfam and work as an adviser for former Labour prime minister Gordon Brown's wife, Sarah, and Baroness Kinnock
