If you're heading out for your Christmas party in Leeds in the coming days, you might spot some beer mats advising you to be careful around the city's river.

    Tom Wright

The Royal Life Saving Society, West Yorkshire Police and the Canal River Trust have teamed up to run a campaign called “Don’t Drink and Drown”..

The campaign will see banners being placed along the riverside in Leeds, posters in local pub bathrooms and beer mats in most bars, highlighting the dangers of being drunk near open water.

A number of people have got into difficulties in the region's rivers in the last five years, nationally 20% of accidental adult drowning victims had alcohol in their blood stream.

    Quote Message

Anyone who’s had a drink and is in a group of friends, they’re aware when one of their friends has had too much. It’s making sure they get home safely - put them in a taxi, make sure they don’t walk. If there’s a shortcut down on the river, make sure they don’t take that path.
