    There's a call for a new approach to flood prevention as the BBC learns rivers in West Yorkshire are peaking at their highest ever level. 

    One year on from the downpours that devastated parts of West Yorkshire, it's emerged the Aire and the Calder both peak at higher levels than they did in the 1970s.

    In the meantime, here's some work that's been completed today by the Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme:

    The disappearance of a 15-year-old girl from her home in Leeds has sparked a police appeal to help find her, external.

    Kate Hunter, from Wetherby, was reported missing in the early hours of Saturday after she failed to come home on Friday night from the centre of Leeds.

    She was last seen between 22:00 and 23:00 at the McDonald's on Briggate with the man in the CCTV images.

    Police say they want to urgently identify the man. Do you know who he is?

    Thankfully, there's just one incident left - for now.

    One lane remains closed and there's slow traffic on the M1 in both directions at J42, M62 (Lofthouse), because of an accident earlier on and barrier repairs.

    A Huddersfield policewoman who appealed for Christmas presents for two young boys in foster care on Twitter has been overwhelmed with thousands of gifts. 

    PC Sally Baines tweeted on Friday that she was "heartbroken" the children had never had pillows, toothbrushes or toys.

    Britain's last deep coal miners walked off their final shift one year ago. BBC News has caught up with some of the 450 men who worked at Kellingley Colliery, near Knottingley, to find out how they have moved on since losing their jobs.

    At its height, Kellingley employed more than 2,000 workers and its closure brought to an end centuries of deep coal mining in Britain.

    Known locally as the Big K, the largest deep pit in Europe was hailed as the new generation of coal mining. Its miners could bring up to 900 tonnes an hour to the surface.

    There's queuing traffic and the main road is closed, with traffic being routed around the junction and back on again,  because of recovery work, a jackknifed lorry and a spillage on the road.

  16. Police appeal for help over pensioner's murder in 1991published at 10:31 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2016

    Twenty five years to the day since Mytholmroyd pensioner Agnes Ogden was found murdered, police are making a fresh appeal to find her killer, external.

    Mrs Ogden, 88, was found dead at her home in Erringden Road on 19 December 1991. She'd been hit in the face and strangled.

    It is not clear whether anything was stolen from her house, and no motive has ever been established for the attack.   

    Police believe someone in the local area knows the identity of her killer and "it's time for that person to come forward".

    Det Supt Jim Dunkerley says: "Mrs Ogden was a much-loved and respected local woman who was the victim of a savage attack in her own home. 

    "We've never closed this case and are now conducting a review to try and determine what happened and who was responsible for a death which rightly shocked residents across West Yorkshire at the time."

    Alistair's had a good year: he retained the Olympic triathlon title at Rio and made headlines when he helped his exhausted brother over the line at the Triathlon World Series in Mexico:

    The quest to find King Arthur's Camelot has puzzled and intrigued scholars and fans for over a thousand years - and it turns out the true location of Camelot could be in West Yorkshire

    A retired Bangor University professor has revealed he believes a small Roman fort at Slack, outside Hebden Bridge, was the location for the mythical ruler's legendary court.

    Prof Peter Field, a renowned expert in Arthurian literature, says: "It was quite by chance. I was looking at some maps, and suddenly all the ducks lined up. I believe I may have solved a 1,400-year-old mystery."

    Prof Field, who taught at Bangor from 1964 to 2004, has been researching the location of Camelot for the past 18 months.

    Half of all the money earmarked for new flood defences in England will be spent on protecting London and areas around the Thames, official figures show.

    Analysis by BBC Yorkshire has found £1.8bn will be spent on the Thames Estuary out of a £3.7bn national flood spending programme.

    About 16,000 homes were flooded across the North of England a year ago, including in Leeds (pictured).

    The Environment Agency said it invested money "where it will have the most benefit".

    The disparity in regional flood defence spending comes as many flood victims remain homeless, 12 months after storms Desmond and Eva devastated parts of West and North Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cumbria.
