  3. Emmerdale dementia episode praised by Alzheimer's Societypublished at 16:48 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2016

    The ITV soap Emmerdale, which is made in Leeds, has been praised by fans and dementia charities for its portrayal of the illness in a special episode.

    Last night's episode was shown from the perspective of long-running character Ashley Thomas, played by John Middleton, who is living with dementia.

    Cathy Baldwin, organisational development manager at the Alzheimer's Society, described it as a "realistic portrayal" of the condition.

    Emmerdale producers have worked with both the Alzheimer's Society and MHA care homes to devise the storyline.  

  4. Leeds rape and kidnap case: Two men face trialpublished at 16:29 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2016

    Two men have appeared in court and denied kidnapping and raping a woman who was given a lift from Leeds city centre.

    Ross Waterhouse, aged 22, of Hyde Park, Leeds, pleaded not guilty to charges of kidnap and rape.

    Matthias Buchmeier, 30, of Manor Park, Scarcroft, denied one count of kidnap.

    Both men were remanded in custody to stand trial on 3 April. A third man arrested in connection with the incident remains on police bail.

    In South Yorkshire on the M1 around J31 a car has broken down and has closed two lanes. There are plenty of delays in the area, so if you're making your Christmas getaway early, I'd avoid if you can.

    A man who claims he was abused at an East Yorkshire children's home has been awarded thousands of pounds of compensation at the High Court in Leeds.

    More than 200 men are suing the Catholic Church over historical abuse at the St William's approved school near Pocklington. 

    Three other men today lost their case for compensation at the High Court in Leeds and another will be decided next month.  

    Lawyers for the men have vowed to fight on and say they may appeal the ruling.

    Mourners have attended the funeral of a prominent Sikh man who tried to "build bridges across the communities".  

    Rajinder Singh Panesar, known to his friends as Halifaxwala after the West Yorkshire town where he settled, has died aged 69.

    Jasjit Singh, a family friend, said: "Many of the next generation of Sikhs will have been personally affected by his teaching."

    A picture of a towel used to wrap a baby boy who died after being left outside a vicarage in Bramley has been released by West Yorkshire Police.

    The boy was found outside St Peter's Church, in Hough Lane, Bramley, last month. It is believed he had been born shortly before he was left by the doorstep. 

    Officers say that they're still searching for the mother and have previously released pictures of a bag and a shirt he was found in. 

    The baby boy, named "Peter" by locals, was taken to hospital by ambulance but was later pronounced dead.

    Police are continuing to search for a teenager who's been missing from her home in West Yorkshire since last night and who is believed to have links with Derby.

    Charlotte Beasley, 15, was last seen at her home in Outwood, Wakefield, at about 20:10 yesterday evening.

    Det Insp Jaz Khan, from West Yorkshire Police, says: "Charlotte is a vulnerable young woman who has limited knowledge of the area.

    "We urgently need to establish her whereabouts and would like to hear from anyone who has seen Charlotte or who has any information that could assist in tracing her."

    Two sisters have been collecting teddy bears for children who will be staying at Leeds General Infirmary over Christmas.

    For the past four Christmases, nine-year-old twins Juliet and Ella, from York, have asked their schoolfriends to donate a bear to the children's ward at the LGI. 

    They came up with the idea after Juliet was diagnosed with a brain tumour on Christmas Eve six years ago. 

    She woke up in hospital on Christmas morning to find a cuddly new friend at the end of her bed.  

    The twins have so far collected 130 bears for this year and doctors say they have so many they can give them out all year round.

    Virgin Trains East Coast and Grand Central are reporting that services heading south are being delayed by about 40 minutes once they get past Doncaster.

    It's due to points failure between Retford and Newark, external.

    However, it's hoped that the problem will be sorted within the hour.

    Leeds Rhinos have signed Manly Sea Eagles hooker Matt Parcell on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

    The 24-year-old Australian started his career with Brisbane Broncos before joining Manly last season.

    Parcell is likely to replace James Segeyaro, who returned to his native Australia recently after the 26-year-old said he was homesick.
