    Police have released the name of a man who was killed in a car crash near Barnsley

    Reece Parkin, 21, died last Friday morning on the A616 bypass between Wortley and Tankersley.

    He was driving a Vauxhall Astra that crashed with a Mercedes van. Reece died at the scene and the driver of the van was taken to hospital, but his injuries were not serious.

    Houses are being flattened in the Calder Valley to make way for flood defences.

    This demolition site is in Mytholmroyd - the Environment Agency bought the houses as part of its £10m flood protection plan.

    Agency managers say the space left by the houses will make it easier for the River Calder to flow through the town.

    The area was badly hit by the Boxing Day floods in 2015.

  8. Man seriously injured in drive-by spray attackpublished at 13:47 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2017

    A man from Barnsley is recovering after having a substance sprayed in his face in an attack on Barnsley Road.

    The 24-year-old was outside a takeaway at about 20:30 on Friday night when a silver car drove past and someone sprayed the unknown substance in the man's face.

    He was taken to hospital suffering from serious facial injuries.

    Police are asking for any information about what happened.

    Felix the Huddersfield Railway Station cat enjoys a privileged life.

    She's been the resident pet at the station since 2011, when she was brought in to catch mice.

  11. Rotherham man one of first to be prosecuted over 'legal highs'published at 13:13 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2017

    A man from Rotherham is one of the first to be sentenced under new laws to tackle the supply of drugs known as "legal highs".

    Kevin Hancock, 41, of no fixed abode, was sentenced to 12 months behind bars after he admitted possession of a psychoactive substance with intent to supply.

    He also pleaded guilty to possession of a Class A drug and shoplifting.  

    "Legal highs" became illegal in May last year.

    In 2015 they were linked to more than 100 deaths in the UK and a rise in violent assaults in prison.

    Let's get some more now on the news we confirmed earlier that council tax is to rise by nearly 4% in North Yorkshire from April.

    The Conservative-led authority's 3.99% increase is part of a plan to save £17m by 2018. 

    Two per cent of the rise will be used to fill a hole in their adult social care budget.

    At a packed meeting at County Hall in Northallerton there were differing views on whether the right decision was reached.

    Labour Councillor Eric Broadbent said: "We can't go on raising council tax. The government needs to look at its priorities."

    UKIP Councillor Sam Cross added: "Something is missing from this [budget]: a big chunk from central government."

    In response, Carl Les, Conservative leader of the council, suggested the authority is talking to MPs about this on a weekly basis and that "the way adult social care is funded is not the right way."

  14. Warning to fans ahead of Ipswich match with Leedspublished at 12:46 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2017

    Suffolk Police has sent out a clear message, external to football fans about supporter behaviour ahead of the game against Leeds on Saturday. 

    With 2,000 Leeds fans expected to travel to Portman Road, the force says it will not tolerate "anti-social behaviour, violence or racial chanting".

    Acting Supt Paul Bradford, who will oversee policing of the match, said: "We would ask both sets of supporters to enjoy the game in a responsible and respectful way, and our policing style will be firm, friendly and fair. 

    "We hope that people enjoy the match sensibly and in the right spirit, as we will not tolerate anti-social behaviour, violence, racial chanting, mindless vandalism or any alcohol-fuelled disorder.

    "We expect around 2,000 Leeds supporters to travel to Portman Road, many of them by coach, and because of this access to Portman Road will be restricted before and during the match, and closed for a short period of time after it."

    Doncaster Sheffield Airport's 1.8-mile long runway is to be strengthened and resurfaced after a £6m investment.

    The resurfacing work will be carried out overnight to minimise disruption to flights and will see the runway double in thickness.

  16. Leeds air pollution: UK could face European Court of Justice over breachespublished at 12:27 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2017

    More on the news that the European Commission is sending a "final warning" to the UK, for letting cities like Leeds fail to address repeated breaches of legal air pollution limits.

    The Commission says 16 cities in the country persistently breach nitrogen dioxide levels, which comes from things like factories and vehicles, particularly diesel engines. 

    Air pollution is linked to the early deaths of about 40,000 people a year in the UK and causes problems such as heart and lung diseases and asthma. 

    The Commission said if the countries failed to take action on the issue within two months, it may decide to take the matter to the European Court of Justice.

    A gang of youths punched and kicked two security guards outside a Leeds shopping centre after they detained a teenage boy.

    It happened outside the St John's Centre just after 17:10 on Saturday 28 January, when the guards removed a boy from the centre. 

    A gang of six other teenagers then assaulted them.

    Passers-by then helped the guards as they were attacked. Neither of the men were seriously injured.

    In the last few minutes, North Yorkshire county councillors have voted to increase council tax by just under 4%. 

    In a heated debate in Northallerton there were calls for central government to do more to fund adult social care. 

    A total of 2% out of the of the 3.99% rise will be used to pay for it.  

    City of York council will set its council tax next week.

    A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of a firearm after a shooting on Butterthwaite Road in Sheffield yesterday.

    A man was taken to hospital with suspected gunshot injuries following the incident.
