    Earlier we told you that councillors in North Yorkshire are expected to agree to a rise in council tax of almost 4% later today as they try to save around £17m by 2018.

    We can now tell you that the authority will use 2% of the increase to try and fill a hole in their social care budget. Currently half of the council's total budget is spent on this.

  3. 'Record hate crimes' after EU referendumpublished at 11:07 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2017

    West Yorkshire has the third-highest level of hate crimes in the country according to new analysis, with the number of recorded incidents in England and Wales at their highest level since the EU referendum.

    More than 14,000 hate crimes were recorded between July and September.

    In 10 forces the number of suspected hate crimes increased by more than 50%, compared with the previous three months.

    Police say monitoring suggests incidents have levelled out after the summer's spike.

    Police are looking for 17-year-old Daniel Santocki from South Elmsall, West Yorkshire.

    The row over the likely high speed HS2 rail route through South Yorkshire could end up in court, with campaigners coming together to try and force a judicial review.

    They say HS2 Ltd did not followed procedures correctly when deciding which route the line would take:

    We did ask HS2 Ltd to comment and they said we needed to speak to the Department for Transport (DfT). 

    A DfT spokesman said they don't comment on potential or ongoing legal proceedings.

    Rising prices coupled with stagnating incomes are putting millions of families on the verge of falling into poverty, according to a York-based charity.

    The Joseph Rowntree Foundation says the number of people who can't afford a decent living standard has increased by four million in the past six years to 19 million.

    Yorkshire's latest unemployment figures are out and the number of people out of work in our region has dropped by 14,000

    The figures are from October and December last year, and show that nationally a record number of people are in work.

    The employment rate now stands at 74.6%, while wage growth also picked up pace. 

    Other figures showed the number of non-UK nationals working in the UK increased by 233,000 to 3.48 million compared with the same period a year ago.

    A mural celebrating Sheffield hosting the Special Olympics in the summer has been unveiled opposite the city's railway station.

    The mural depicts some of Sheffield and South Yorkshire's most famous landmarks, with boxer Kell Brook helping to launch the event.

    Legendary American showman Buffalo Bill's visit to West Yorkshire in 1904 comes under the spotlight in a new exhibition at Halifax's Bankfield Museum. 

    He was instrumental in creating the modern image of cowboys with his huge shows of sharp shooting and battle recreations including Native Americans and up to 500 horses.

    Thousands of jobs could come to Sheffield after plans were given the go ahead yesterday to redevelop the West Bar Square area of the city around the law courts.

    The £175m development will create 3,500 jobs and will see the area transformed into apartment blocks, a four-star hotel, restaurants, shops and offices.

  11. Council tax set to rise in North Yorkshirepublished at 09:47 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2017

    People living in North Yorkshire are set to see their council tax rise by almost 4% from April.

    County Councillors are today expected to sign off the proposal.

    The rise will cost the average Band D household in North Yorkshire an extra £45 a year.

    Police have released more details about a heavily pregnant woman who's gone missing with her five-year-old daughter from Beeston in Leeds.

    Alicja Dworakowska is 29-years-old with blonde-ginger shoulder-length hair and freckles.  

    Police say she was last seen wearing a black, waterproof coat.

    Her daughter is white with blonde hair and was wearing a pink hat, with earflaps down the side, a beige coat and a pink dress.

    Officers are urging Ms Dworakowska, or anyone who knows where she is, to contact them.

    Yesterday we told you about the first timetabled steam-driven services to be run on the world famous Settle-Carlisle railway line in decades.

    Tornado, the newest steam locomotive in Britain, is pulling 12 Northern services on the Settle-Carlisle line over three consecutive days this week.

    Here are the latest details of problems on Yorkshire's roads this morning:

    • There are severe delays and queuing traffic on the M18 Southbound between J3 A6182 (St Catherines) and J2 A1(M) after an accident. Congestion to J5 M180 (Stainforth). All lanes have now been re-opened
    • Slow traffic's reported on the M62 Eastbound at J24 A629 (Ainley Top). Congestion to J23 A640 / A643 (Huddersfield)
    • Heavy traffic's also reported on the A165 Filey Road Northbound at Prince Of Wales Terrace/Westbourne Grove in the roadworks area.

    People who have written offensive messages on social media about Syrian refugees being resettled on the North Yorkshire coast are being warned they could be prosecuted. 

    The borough of Scarborough has recently taken in five families under a government programme.

  17. Broken down train causing problems at Sheffieldpublished at 08:25

    A train's broken down train near Dore and Totley Station in South Yorkshire and is causing delays between Sheffield and Chesterfield this morning.

    It's also affecting trains on the London St Pancras-Nottingham-Sheffield-Liverpool Lime Street-Nottingham-Norwich routes.

    All trains on the route will be delayed in the Chesterfield direction only, with trains into Sheffield being able to run as normal.

    I've been speaking to residents of Leafield Towers in Moortown, Leeds, which was the scene of a fire earlier this morning which at its height was tackled by about 50 firefighters

    No-one was seriously hurt during the blaze at the block of flats, according to West Yorkshire Fire Service, but I've been told the man who lives in the flat where the fire broke out has been taken to hospital suffering from the effects of breathing in smoke.

    Residents tell me they were woken up in the early hours by firefighters banging on their doors.

    Leafield Towers resident Trevor says: "I thought somebody was trying to break into my flat and break the door in, but the fire brigade were there.

    "I couldn't see a thing in front of me. You couldn't seen in front of your face, the smoke was that dense."
