    The independent Local Government Commission for England is asking residents in Rotherham to have their say on draft proposals for new council ward boundaries.

    The nine-week public consultation will look at the idea that the town should have 59 councillors in future - four fewer than present.

    This work will also outline how those councillors should represent nine three-councillor wards and 16 two-councillor wards across the borough.

    The consultation , externalruns from today until 4 September.

  2. Bid to raise £1,000 for burgled York cafepublished at 16:17 British Summer Time 4 July 2017

    You might remember that yesterday we mentioned a community cafe in York had been burgled, with a safe raided and cash stolen from the till.

    A crowdfunding campaign has now been launched to raise £1,000 the pay-as-you-feel Chill Cafe in Acomb.

    Organisers behind the crowdfunding bid say the burglary's caused "devastation" for the team working there who work "tirelessly" in the local community.

    A woman in her 20s, from York, has been arrested on suspicion of burglary, possessing drugs, and assaulting a police officer.

    Some good news ahead of the evening rush hour...

    The M62 has completely reopened eastbound between J21 and J22 after a lorry jack-knifed on that carriageway just after 07:00 this morning.

    Three of the four lanes were closed and delays of 90 minutes were reported in that stretch,.

    But Highways England confirms that traffic is now moving freely as you move from Lancashire into Yorkshire:

    Here's the scene near Weetwood Police Station in Leeds at the moment:

    A cordon's been set up there after what's believed to be a hand grenade was brought in to police by a member of the public who'd been clearing out the house of a dead relative.

    The A660 Otley Road is currently closed near the scene, which is just opposite Lawnswood School.

    It's not known if the device is "live" and Army bomb disposal experts have been contacted.

    A 29-year-old man's been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a stabbing in Sheffield at the weekend.

    Emergency services were called to the Wicker in the city centre at about 03:15 on Sunday morning, following reports that two men aged 24 and 27 had suffered stab wounds.

    Both men remain in hospital in a serious but stable condition, police say.

    The arrested man remains in custody.

    A 19-year-old man arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent has been released under investigation as enquiries continue.

    Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to contact police.

    Have you seen Cain Holmes? Police are wanting help in tracing the 20-year-old who's gone missing from his home in Sheffield.

    He was last seen at about 17:30 on Monday in Shirecliffe Road, after the moped he was riding was involved in a collision with two other vehicles.

    It's understood that Mr Holmes was hurt in the collision, but left the scene before the emergency services arrived.

    Officers say they're keen to find him as he may need medical treatment and there are growing concerns for his welfare.

    It’s believed he was wearing a maroon tracksuit top and black bottoms.

    A woman who believes her baby was abducted at birth by staff at a Spanish hospital is to have her case heard by the European Court of Human Rights.

    Ruth Appleby, from North Yorkshire, was told her daughter had died hours after being born apparently healthy in 1992.

    She later learned that thousands of Spanish babies were taken and given up for adoption.

    A building at Sheffield Children's Hospital has failed government fire safety tests carried out in the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy in London.

    Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust is one of three NHS trusts in England to have failed the safety tests.

    NHS Impovement says the Children's Hospital building is not used for inpatient accommodation and "measures are being put in place "to ensure the safety of the building while the cladding is removed.

    More on the news that a police cordon's in place at Weetwood Police station in Leeds after a man arrived with what's believed to be a hand grenade.

    Police say he'd been clearing out the home of a relative who'd recently died when he found what appeared to be a grenade.

    The item is currently being "assessed" and the army's bomb disposal squad has been contacted, police say.

    Meanwhile, Otley Road is currently closed on both carriageways.

    Two newly-created woods in North Yorkshire are in the running to be named the best in the UK.

    One, at Nether Poppleton, near York, has 1,000 trees.

    The other is a nature reserve being made on the banks of the River Nidd, near Kirk Hammerton.

    The winner will be announced by The Woodland Trust later this month.

    A Doncaster man has been jailed for four years for pouring boiling water over another man.

    Andrew Pilkington, formerly of East Avenue in Woodlands, was also sentenced for stealing a car and dangerous driving by Sheffield Crown Court yesterday.

    The 33-year-old was jailed for four years for assaulting and pouring boiling water over another inmate while at HMP Doncaster in May 2016.

    He was also jailed consecutively for 10 months for stealing a car and dangerous driving.
