    Elly Fiorentini
    BBC Local Live, Yorkshire

Sheffield's new Tram Train project will cost four times more than expected, after a new report was released today.

The National Audit office report also says the 'complex budget' is overdue.

The train is two and a half years behind schedule meaning the experimental Rotherham to Sheffield service is now expected to start next Summer.

    Sheffield Supertrams

Network Rail had to alter their infrastructure to handle the tram train vehicles. They thought it would cost £15m but the final bill could reach £75m.

However, that doesn't include the £32m to buy the tram trains themselves or £14m for upgrading existing tramway tracks for the service.

The Department for Transport has also had to pay £2.5m to Stagecoach, who operate the Supertram network, as compensation because the new service is late.
