    The electrification of the Midland Mainline through Sheffield will not happen.

    Instead the government will require bi-modal trains, which can run on electric and diesel lines, from 2022.

    The Department for Transport says journeys from Sheffield to London will be 20 minutes faster.

    It also says there will be 1,000 more seats an hour which is an increase of 50%.

  2. Police urge vigilance after Harrogate lamb theftpublished at 10:32 British Summer Time 20 July 2017

    Police are urging rural residents to be vigilant after ten lambs were stolen from a field near Harrogate.

    Some time in the last week, the ten Texel lambs were taken on the B6161 Otley Road near Beckwithshaw.

    Inspector Jon Grainge, said: “Over recent years, North Yorkshire Police and surrounding rural forces have taken an increasing number of reports relating to the theft of sheep.

    Some will be destined almost immediately for the illegal meat trade, while others are "hidden" in open view in fields and barns."

    Police want anyone with information about the theft to contact them.

    It happened in the Chancery Road area at about 03:30 this morning and there were no injuries

    West Yorkshire Police have posted this picture after the van went straight over the middle of the roundabout.

    They said in a tweet: "Ossett - vehicle/driver failed to see the roundabout and caused this. #doh".

  4. Questions to fire service and council about safety of Bradford flatspublished at 10:03 British Summer Time 20 July 2017

    A meeting is being held today for people living in a Bradford city centre block of flats, which failed fire safety tests on its cladding.

    The owners of Landmark House (pictured) - along with the fire service and council - will answer questions about the future of the seven storey building and how it can be made safer.

    Nine high rise tower blocks in West Yorkshire have failed fire safety cladding checks.

    The West Yorkshire tower blocks which failed cladding combustibility tests are:

    The burst water main in Oughtibridge has closed a local primary school.

    Oughtibridge Primary School has had to close because it has no water supply.

    Harrogate Borough Council has defended its decision to choose Green Hammerton as the best site to build 3,000 new homes.

    It comes after villagers voiced their anger outside outside a council meeting last night:

    Campaigners say that Flaxby would be a more suitable location as it has a better road infrastructure.

    Councillor Rebecca Burnett is responsible for planning in the borough. She says that the location has been chosen because of its transport links:

    The council has not yet made a decision and are accepting comments on the plans.

    A growing army of survivalists, known as "preppers," is turning to a company in Leeds, to help them get ready for the collapse of civilization, in the event of a catastrophe.

    They're using an army surplus supplier in Stourton, to buy survivalist gear, which they keep in case of a nuclear war, terrorist attack or break-down in law-and-order.

    Elkie Brooks has rescheduled tonight's concert at the Grand Opera House York because of a chest infection.

    The Grand Opera House says she is under strict orders from a doctor and will not be able to perform.

    Elkie Brooks has apologised to her fans for any inconvenience and disappointment caused.

    The concert has been rescheduled for Monday the 4th of December 2017.

    Sheffield city council have won an award for a project which adds plants and shrubs alongside pavements.

    It's their Grey to Green scheme at the Riverside Business District near the city centre.

    The Piece Hall Trust say they hope the refurbishment will turn it into an international destination.

    Police investigating historic allegations of child sex abuse in Kirklees have arrested a further 16 people.

    West Yorkshire Police say 15 men and one woman were arrested from addresses in Huddersfield and Bradford during a three-day operation.

    Plans to build a so-called "super prison" at Full Sutton near York are likely to go ahead.

    East Riding of Yorkshire Council is due to consider the plans for a new £91m building today.

    If it goes ahead, it will be built next to the existing jail and will house a thousand men.

    The government says modern jails help cut re-offending. But people living in the area say their village can't cope with a second prison.

    An unlucky driver lost the top layer of the load of hay he was transporting yesterday, after his lorry wouldn't fit under a railway bridge.

    The vehicle got stuck under Sowerby Bridge in Calderdale, West Yorkshire.

    Luckily, the car behind didn't follow the lorry under the bridge.

    Crime with a knife is up by almost 50% in South Yorkshire.

    In the year ending March 2016 there were 807 incidents involving a knife or blade, compared to 1176 incidents in the year ending March 2017. That's an increase of 46%.

    The figure includes possession of a knife, threat, and injury.

    South Yorkshire Police say the number of people being injured from stab wounds has risen steadily in the past five years.

    The force has launched a campaign to get people to surrender their knives.

    Detective Superintendent Una Jennings, who is leading the campaign, says people carrying a knife in a public place can expect to be challenged:
