The electrification of the Midland Mainline through Sheffield will not happen.
Instead the government will require bi-modal trains, which can run on electric and diesel lines, from 2022.
The Department for Transport says journeys from Sheffield to London will be 20 minutes faster.
It also says there will be 1,000 more seats an hour which is an increase of 50%.
