Simon Nehemiah Warren, of Hoole Street, Walkley, met his victim on a night out in June and offered her a lift home. Later that evening he violently assaulted her.

The 34-year-old targeted the 40-year-old woman as she was walking on her own on Meadow Street. She got into his car and he began driving her home.

The woman told him she had friends at her flat, and at that point he became "incredibly violent", police say.

He kicked and punched her in the head more than 30 times and left her lying in the street.

Warren had previously pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm.

  20. MP warns over Brexit impact on Huddersfield's space engineering firmspublished at 17:00 British Summer Time 12 September 2017

Companies in West Yorkshire involved in space exploration fear their funding could dry up after Brexit, an MP has warned.

Barry Sheerman, Labour MP for Huddersfield, says precision engineering firms in the town - which have made parts for Mars probes - are reliant on funding from the European Union.

In June, the government laid out its plan to secure growth in the UK's £13.7bn space industry in the Queen's Speech.

While Brexit will not affect the UK's status as a member of the European Space Agency, projects such as Galileo - the European sat-nav system - are largely funded by the EU.

But there are restrictions on "third countries" working on classified EU information and technologies, which applies to Galileo.

    Quote Message

The companies are increasingly worried about the future of partnerships across Europe and the funding from Europe which makes exploration and those cutting-edge companies' lives possible."
