    A £300m expansion of Sheffield's Meadowhall shopping centre has been given the go-ahead by city councillors.

    The proposed 330,000 sq ft facility will include a new cinema, restaurants, gym and new community spaces.

    British Land, the joint owner of the site, has previously said the extension will "continue Meadowhall's evolution".

  2. Storm Aileen: Yorkshire's motorists warned to take carepublished at 16:36 British Summer Time 12 September 2017

    Winds of more than 60 mph are expected across parts of Yorkshire tonight as Storm Aileen passes over the region.

    Highways England has taken the unusual step of warning motorists of particular roads which could be badly affected by the strong gusts.

    Weather warnings are in place from 21:00 tonight until 09:00 tomorrow when things are expected to calm down.

    Drivers of lorries, caravans and motorbikes are being advised to avoid the following areas around Yorkshire overnight:

    • M1 J39-J40 Crigglestone to Dewsbury
    • A628 Woodhead Pass

    A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of man in Sheffield at the weekend.

    Sami Khaled Saif Al-Sarsoori, 31, was found with stab wounds at about midnight on Sunday in the Wensley Estate area of Firth Park and died later in hospital.

    Khalid Mokadeh, 21, of The Oval, Sheffield, is also charged with possession of an offensive weapon.

    He's been remanded in custody and is due to appear before Sheffield Crown Court on Tuesday 10 October.

    Police investigating a failed burglary in Huddersfield last week have issued an e-fit image of a man they want to speak to about the incident.

    The attempted burglary, from a property on Stocks Lane, took place between Tuesday 5 September and Thursday 7 September after two men entered the property.

    The men made off empty-handed in a black Audi saloon which is thought to have suffered damage to its nearside wing mirror and passenger door after hitting another vehicle.

    One of the males officers want to speak to in connection with the incident is described as aged in his late teens to early 20s, with a round face, clean shaven and wearing a balaclava rolled up to look like a hat.

    More shows and more seats are being promised at Scarborough's landmark Open Air Theatre after a new deal was signed between its owners and one of the country's leading concert promoters.

    Scarborough Council and promoters Live Nation have signed a new 10-year deal for the venue which this summer has seen concerts by acts like Little Mix, Olly Murs, Cliff Richard and The Beach Boys.

    Derek Bastiman, leader of Scarborough Borough Council says the new deal will ensure the theatre remains a "critical" part of the town's economy.

    "Working together, we will ensure that the venue continues to build on its success to date, attracts even more big name acts and brings even more economic benefits to the whole borough," Mr Bastiman adds.

    Joyce Pickard who was well known in York and further afield has died at the age of 95. She was often seen cycling around the city on her bike with anti-war slogans.

    She became the youngest headteacher at The Mount School in York where students past and present have been remembering her with fondness.

    Joyce was a Quaker and lived in York where she campaigned for many social causes, including the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, York Peace Centre, York Against the War, Euthanasia and York Interfaith. In 2007 she was made an Honorary Freeman of the City of York .

    Adrienne Richmond who's Principal of the Mount School said "her youthfulness, vigour and determination made her a formidable role model. We are thankful for her life and her service to the School and its wider community.”

    A lot apparently, so much so, that Leeds City Museum have opened a new exhibit dedicated to showing off the "animal kingdom’s biggest and best biters".

    Among them is the terrifying tooth of a megalodon, a gigantic, 60ft long shark which dominated the ocean around three million years ago, feeding on whales and other sharks.

    Bite Me! also features teeth, skulls and bones from modern mammals and reptiles and shows how animals have adapted to the environment as they have evolved.

    Skeleton fans will be excited to learn that you can also see the skulls of an 11,000 year-old brown bear, a dolphin and an Atlantic walrus complete with long, canine tusks.

  13. Manchester attack: 'Hero' faces trial over Arena theftspublished at 13:20 British Summer Time 12 September 2017

    A homeless man who was hailed a hero after the Manchester Arena attack is to go on trial charged with stealing a purse and mobile phone from victims.

    Chris Parker, 33, now from Halifax, pleaded not guilty to two counts of theft and two counts of attempted theft at Manchester Crown Court.

    It is alleged he took the purse from Pauline Healey, whose 14-year-old granddaughter Sorrell Leczkowski, from Leeds, died in the explosion in May.

    He will face a trial on 2 January.

    An anti-fracking protestor says he's upset that fracking at Kirby Misperton has moved a step closer today.

    Planners have approved the route for lorries which will be going to the Third Energy site in Ryedale. It means that equipment could be moved onto the site by the end of the week.

    Ian Conlan is from Frack Free Ryedale.

    North Yorkshire County Council says the consent has been subject to rigorous planning conditions at the site in Kirby Misperton and will now ensure those conditions are fully discharged and monitored.

    Third Energy has already told BBC Radio York it intends to start fracking before the end of the year.

    Strong winds are expected across Yorkshire later today.

    Storm Aileen is en-route with a amber weather warning for winds .

    Gusts of 65-75mph possible tonight and in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

    The wind warning goes as far north as Bradford, and will include Leeds and Sheffield as being the worst places hit.

    What does an amber weather warning mean?

    The Met Office says it means there is an increased likelihood of bad weather affecting you, which could potentially disrupt your plans and possibly cause travel delays, road and rail closures, interruption to power and the potential risk to life and property. Amber means you need to be prepared to change your plans and protect you, your family and community from the impacts of the severe weather based on the forecast from the Met Office

    Two men, including one from Dewsbury, who raped and sexually assaulted a woman in a "truly horrific attack" have been jailed.

    William Kelly (pictured right), 46, of Beechfield Avenue, Blackpool, met the victim in a bar in the town in April 2016 where he raped her.

    Kelly then took the woman back to a hotel with Steven Williams, 49, who also raped and sexually assaulted her.

    Williams (pictured left), of The Combs in Dewsbury, who denied all the charges, was jailed for 13 and a half years. Kelly, who pleaded guilty, was sentenced to 12 years.
