    Kate Linderholm
    BBC Local Live, Sheffield

People in parts of South Yorkshire and Derbyshire woke this morning to find police taking action against an alleged Islamist terror plot against the UK that could have come to fruition during the Christmas period.

Residents on Shirebrook Road at Meersbrook in Sheffield were awoken by a loud bang at around 05:30 this morning as counter-terrorism officers raided a house and arrested a 41-year old man.

Retired Joan Miller, 63, who lives opposite the house, said she looked out of her window to see many plain-clothed armed officers in the street

She said the officers shouted "very abruptly" for people to stay in their homes:

    Quote Message

"It was a very loud bang. It shook the house. I pulled the curtains and saw lots of armed men in the street, so I kept watching because that was quite extraordinary"

  8. Drug trafficker swam across sea to try to escape justicepublished at 14:20 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2017

A man who swam from Spain to Gibraltar in a bid to escape justice after attempting to smuggle cocaine into North Yorkshire in a light aircraft, has been jailed.

    JuggsImage source, NCA

Jason Waterman, from Otterspool Lane, Watford, was wanted in connection with the recovery of seven kilos of the drug worth around £1.2m, at Bagby airfield near Thirsk, in October 2015.

The 33-year-old, whose nicknames include Jugs and Jumbo, had been on board an aircraft that had just flown into the airfield.

As Border Force officers arrived on the scene to carry out checks on the plane he ran off, leaving a drug-filled suitcase in a nearby hedgerow.

National Crime Agency investigators began to track him down and following a series of media appeals, he finally handed himself in to police in Gibraltar, dripping wet and carrying a bag of wet clothes in June 2017.

He later told officers he had been swum from Spain rather than come across the land border.

He was charged with conspiring to import a class A drug at Bradford Crown Court on Monday, 18 December.

He pleaded guilty and a judge sentenced him to seven years and two months in prison.

  9. Terror raids: Four arrests as army bomb disposal called inpublished at 14:12 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2017

    Analysis

    Dominic Casciani
    Home Affairs Correspondent

Police have arrested four men in counter terrorism raids across South Yorkshire and Derbyshire this morning.

There are two types of terrorism raids in the UK.

Many occur very quietly as detectives knock on the door and take the suspect into custody under normal police powers.

    Raids

Then there are the full-on raids where doors or windows have to be knocked in, cordons set up and the bomb squad called.

Such operations are only ever mounted because secret intelligence - perhaps from an intercepted communication and often only fragmentary - suggests there is something at a property they need to get to the bottom of.

    Raid

None of which is proof that any of those who have been arrested have committed an offence - but officers now have up to 14 days, subject to court oversight, to build a case.

One of their priorities is likely to be forensically examining phones. All recent major terrorism investigations have turned on not just what officers found during searches, but what they uncovered from online lives.
