  12. Barnsley MP to stand as Sheffield City Region Mayorpublished at 08:35 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2018

    Liz Roberts
    Political Reporter, BBC Radio Sheffield

The Barnsley Central Labour MP Dan Jarvis has announced his intention to stand to be Sheffield City Region Mayor.

There's a vote for a regional mayor in May. He's the third Labour candidate to throw his hat in the ring.

    Dan Jarvis

Former Sports Minister and Sheffield MP Richard Caborn and Sheffield Councillor Ben Curran also want to be the Labour candidate.

Mr Jarvis, who was elected in Barnsley Central on 2011, says he'll try to remain as an MP even if elected. In a statement he said:

    Quote Message

We are on course to elect a Mayor with no powers and no resources. The new mayor will need to leverage maximum influence to reach a consensus on how to proceed and drive our region forward. If my first act as Mayor was to stand down as an MP, I'd be needlessly squandering my ability to inflict pressure on the government through championing our cause in Parliament."
