Police say it's "pure luck" a 62-year-old man wasn't seriously hurt when petrol was poured through his letterbox and set alight in the early hours of this morning in Castleford.
Officers now believe the person responsible could have been badly burned themselves.
It happened on Healdfield Road after 02:00 when two men poured accelerant through the letterbox of a house.
Detectives say they think one of the suspects may have burned his own hand in the attack.
Neighbours alerted the man who lives in the house to the fire and he was later treated in hospital for the effects of breathing in smoke.

More anti-terror measures are to be introduced in York, including restrictions on vehicles near the historic Minster and York Racecourse.
Traffic's already restricted in the city centre and extra barriers were introduced ahead of the Saint Nicholas Fayre at Christmas.
But police have questioned the quality of the existing arrangements and are advising more restrictions are put in place as the terror threat level remains at "severe".
Of particular concern are areas around York Minster and near the racecourse, police believe.

Council workers who had gone to clean up the fly-tipping site made the discovery last Friday.

Do you know this man? Police want to speak to him after a man robbed a shop last month armed with a hammer:
Officers think the man's "distinctive" tattoo will give him away.
The robbery happened at Everyday Essentials on Blackman Lane in Leeds on 29 December.
A lone woman who was working in the shop at the time was threatened with a hammer and the man demanded she open the till.
He then tried, unsuccessfully, to open the till himself before taking the victim’s purse from her handbag and leaving the store:
