The super blue blood moon clearly dazzled skywatchers in Yorkshire.

A lunar eclipse, supermoon and a blue moon all coincided for the first time since 31 March 1866.

  8. Osborne urges PM to focus on north-south dividepublished at 06:58 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2018

    Kamal Ahmed
    Economics editor

The former chancellor, George Osborne, has urged the prime minister to focus on poor education attainment in the north to boost British growth.

    Kids

Mr Osborne said that the project he launched while he was still at the Treasury - the Northern Powerhouse - was still vital for the economy.

Concerns arose in 2017 that the project had been sidelined by Theresa May.

His comments come as a new report says there is a major education divide between the north and the south.

The study by the Northern Powerhouse Partnership says pupils in the North of England are on average one GCSE grade behind comparable pupils in the south.

It also reveals that one quarter of secondary schools in the north are judged by Ofsted to be inadequate or in need of improvement.

An abnormal load transportiing a bridge joint broke down around midnight.

The recovery work has been completed, but a specially built crane needs to be dismantled.

The northbound stretch has now re-opened but it's estimated southbound won't re-open until after the rush-hour.

  10. Leeds University 200-mile 'country roads' driverless trialpublished at 06:40 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2018

An autonomous car project will attempt a complex journey across the UK, taking in country roads and high-speed roundabouts.

    CarImage source, Catapult

The HumanDrive initiative will first simulate a range of conditions, before the car starts its 200-mile (320km) journey in December 2019. The UK wants to get driverless cars on the road by 2021.

Mark Westwood, chief technology officer of the Transport Systems Catapult, which is one partner involved in the project, said: "This project is about advancing the state of the art and trying to do something more demanding. The control system will learn to drive like a human."

To enable this, a group of competent human drivers will show off their skills in a simulator based at Leeds University and the data will be collated. Data is also being collected from roads around the UK.

This will be fed into the machine learning system and driverless cars will begin safety testing and trials on private tracks.
