    South Yorkshire Police are checking records over the last two decades to see if a case from the past might unlock the identify of a man whose bones were found in a Barnsley field.

    The skull and other bones were found on land off Mitchell's Street, at Swaithe, near the Stairfoot roundabout on Sunday.

    A post mortem examination will be held but it is thought the bones have been there for around 20 years.

    A green group in York is welcoming news the government's looking at copying a Scandinavian bottle recycling system.

    People get money back on bottles they return in Norway.

    The scheme means 98% of bottles are recycled there compared with half in the UK.

    West Yorkshire snowboarder Katie Ormerod will compete in the Winter Olympics despite fracturing a wrist in training.

    The 20-year-old, from Brighouse, who will compete in the slopestyle and big air events, came off a rail during slopestyle practice at Phoenix Park in Pyeongchang,.

    The Winter Olympics run from 9 to 25 February and the slopestyle qualifier takes place in South Korea on Sunday.

    A Team GB spokeswoman told BBC Sport that Ormerod has a "minor fracture to her left wrist".

    She became the first Briton to win a World Cup big air gold in Moscow last year, while she took slopestyle bronze at the 2017 X Games.

  7. Man stabbed in during attempted robbery in Leedspublished at 13:28 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2018

    A man is recovering from a stab injury he suffered during an attempted robbery in the centre of Leeds last night.

    The incident happened near Mecca Bingo opposite the city bus station on New York Street just after 20:15.

    The 48-year-old man had been with two friends in the nearby park when they were approached by a group of youths.

    The man was punched and stabbed in the back and was taken to hospital for treatment, but his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

    Police say the group was described as a "mix of white and black males and females".

    The company behind plans to frack in North Yorkshire's Ryedale says it doesn't expect to start before Easter.

    Third Energy is still waiting to hear if it's won government approval to go ahead with the drilling at its KM8 site in Kirby Misperton.

    It's now taking some equipment off the site to be used elsewhere.

    Alan Linn is its chief operating officer. He says they want to be sure the government is fully satisfied with its plans:

    Fracking involves drilling down and directing water and chemicals under high-pressure into rock to release trapped gas.

    Opponents say it leads to environmental impacts including water contamination, air pollution and earthquakes.

    Drawings by by Leonardo da Vinci will go on display in Leeds and Sheffield next year, it has been announced.

    Almost 150 sketches will be displayed at simultaneous exhibitions around the UK to mark the 500th anniversary of the Renaissance master's death.

    The venues in Leeds and Sheffield will each show a selection of 12 drawings from the Royal Collection.

    The drawings will then be bought together in May 2019 to form part of an exhibition at Buckingham Palace, in what is billed as the "largest exhibition of Leonardo's work in over 65 years".

    Police in Scarborough want to speak to a ginger haired man with a ginger goatee beard, in connection with a man being found unconscious, outside The Cask pub in the town.

    The injured man is in a critical condition in hospital.

    The ginger haired man spoke to ambulance staff at the scene and is thought to be in his 30s.

    He was walking from the front of The Cask, down Grosvenor Road towards Valley Road and told paramedics he'd seen the injured man two to three hours before.

    The injured 37-year-old was found outside the pub at lunchtime on Wednesday last week.

    South Yorkshire policy say early forensic investigation shows the bones found in a field in Barnsley belonged to a man and were buried in the last 20 years.

    Searches have been under way in Swaithe near the Stairfoot roundabout since the bones were discovered on Sunday.

    An investigation is continuing into how a human skull came to be buried on land in Barnsley.

    South Yorkshire Police said the gender and age of the person has not yet been established and it is not clear how long the bones have been in the ground.

    The discovery was made by the grandson of a farmer on Sunday afternoon, in farmland at Swaithe near the Stairfoot roundabout.

    Officers are treating the death as unexplained pending further forensic tests.

    More information is expected from a press conference which is under way.

    The bringing down of an international drugs market, that operated via the dark web, has meant 26 North Yorkshire Police officers have received a Chief Constable's Commendation for their role in the operation.

    Ross Brennan, 28, (pictured left) from Huntington in York, was jailed for just under 14 years in September, while Aarron Gledhill,who's 30 and from Huddersfield, was given a sentence of nearly 4 years.

    They used encryption software to hide transactions of fentanyl and other potent drugs - in an operation that earned them close to £0.5M.

    A bin lorry and a lorry have crashed on the M621 at Elland Road this morning.

    It happened just before 10:50 at J1.

    One of the people involved has been left with minor injuries.

    Some reports suggest that the HGV could be a tanker, although this hasn't be confirmed.

    The sister of a man who died after falling into the River Ouse in York has issued a heartfelt plea to drunken students to keep away from the river.

    It's as student union officials take to the streets to hand out safety advice on one of the busiest student nights out of the week.
