    People living in part of Leeds near the site of a major fire overnight are being warned their water may be discoloured this morning

  3. Investigation into human bones discovered near Barnsleypublished at 06:54 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2018

    Investigations are continuing this morning after human bones were discovered near Barnsley.

    The bones, discovered on Sunday, had been buried on land off Mitchell Street in Swaithe, police say.

    Further forensic examinations and analysis will need to be conducted before an identity and also the cause of death can be determined.

    Police say there is "no indication" people living on the land next to where the bones were discovered are linked or connected in any way.

    Fire crews have been tackling a major fire overnight at an industrial site in Leeds.

    Twenty homes were evacuated near the fire at a building in Pudsey late last night.

    At its height, 15 fire engines were called to the blaze at Moulds Patterns and Models on Kent Road.

    The firm makes bathroom suites and some hazardous materials are believed to be kept inside, so people living nearby were urged to keep their doors and windows closed.

    No-one is believed to have been injured.

    Water supplies in the area were also affected because of the amount needed by the fire service.

    A total of seven fire engines remain on site this morning and investigations are due to take place later into the cause of the blaze.

    The Brontë Parsonage in Haworth has made a list of places across England that have shaped the country's music and literature.

    According to Historic England the locations have "witnessed creativity and will continue to inspire generations of people".

    The parsonage was home to the three literary Brontë sisters Charlotte, Emily and Anne from 1820 onwards.

    It was in this house that, as children and young adults, the sisters wrote some of their most famous novels, including Charlotte's Jane Eyre, Emily's Wuthering Heights and Anne's Agnes Grey.

  7. Filey MP raises shorter fishing season concernspublished at 17:40 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2018

    The MP for Filey has raised concerns about plans to shorten the fishing season.

    The Environment Agency argues stopping fishing in July and August will allow stocks of salmon and trout to recover.

    But Kevin Hollinrake MP disagrees and has met with local fishermen including Rex Harrison:

    The politician says he will meet Fisheries Minister George Eustice to raise the concerns.

    Kevin Hollinrake says if there must be a break then April and May would do less damage to the local tourism industry.

    Human bones have been discovered in Barnsley, South Yorkshire Police have revealed.

    The discovery has been made in Swaithe on land off Mitchell Street where a crime scene is still in place.

    Officers say the find was reported on Sunday afternoon and are they are yet to verify how long they have been there for, or even if they are the remains of a man or a woman.

    Police say there is "no indication" people living on the land next to where the bones were discovered are linked or connected in any way.

  9. Claim new tip charges 'will lead to fly-tipping'published at 17:07 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2018

    There are claims new charges being introduced at council waste recycling centres in Leeds from this week will increase the problem of fly-tipping across the city.

    People will now be charged to dispose of items such as tyres, ceramics, rubble and plasterboard - other councils in Yorkshire have already introduced similar schemes.

    Coun Barry Anderson says people "won't want to pay the new charges" so they'll find areas where there "is no CCTV" to get rid of their waste.

    But Leeds City Council says "fly tipping is a serious offence" and they doubt that "the charges would mean that normally law-biding citizens turn to crime."

    A Leeds MP has been questioning former directors of Carillion after the collapse of the construction company last month.

    Rachel Reeves, the Labour MP for Leeds West is also the Chair of the Business Committee and was asking some very direct questions earlier today.

    Carillion's collapse last month sent shockwaves through the building and construction sector, casting a shadow over a number of public sector projects.

    A campaigner for better railways says he wonders why the operating of the East Coast Main Line seems to be such a problem.

    Stagecoach - the 90% owner of Virgin Trains East Coast - is having its contract to run services through Yorkshire to London and Scotland ended early, after the Transport Secretary said the company had "got its numbers wrong".

    It may mean the government steps in to run those trains.

    The leader of Sheffield Council has said there is "further to go" when it comes to women's role in politics.

    The school who employed a primary school teacher who was caught out by a group of so-called paedophile hunters says they have been left shocked by his actions.

    Shane Shaw, 29 of Greenhead Avenue, Huddersfield, had pleaded guilty at Leeds Crown Court to one charge of causing or inciting a boy aged 13 to 15 to engage in sexual activity.

    His former employers Southroyd Primary School in Pudsey said: "This incident has shocked our whole school community."

    "As soon as we were made aware of the situation we took immediate action and the member of staff concerned is no longer an employee."

    “The police have confirmed that no child was directly involved in this incident and that there is no evidence to suggest that the safety of any of our children at Southroyd has been compromised in any way."

    Luckily the driver involved in this crash near Thirsk escaped with minor injuries this morning:

    It happened on the A19 southbound between Thirsk and Topcliffe earlier today and involved two cars.

    The driver of the pictured car was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

    The car has since been removed from the scene and delays are easing.

  15. MP critical of all-male shortlist for county mayor rolepublished at 16:02 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2018

    Rotherham's MP has criticised her party for an all-male shortlist for the role of South Yorkshire Mayor.

    Sarah Champion has said that she is "very frustrated" that more was not done by Labour to provide support and training for possible women candidates.

  16. Lost Leeds rabbit needs 'best friend' backpublished at 15:59 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2018

    This rabbit was found in a Leeds tyre depot, and now the RSPCA say they need your help in finding his "best friend".

    The rabbit, called Piglet, was found at the depot on Headingley Lane last Friday - he has a microchip but the original owners had given him away.

    The RSPCA say that he is part of a "bonded pair" so he possibly lives with another rabbit called Twiglet - Rabbits pair for life and get very close so when they are split up it can cause them stress.

    Officers said "If an owner can not be found, Piglet will be rehomed, and hopefully he can find a new best friend.”

    York is the only city in the north to make it into a top 10 list of cities expected to dominate the tech industry.

    It's after a survey by the Joblift search engine identified York as a major location for future job growth.

  18. Search for owner of stolen sound barpublished at 15:44 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2018

    Police are looking for the owner of a sound bar found in a stolen car in December.

    The blue Seat Leon was taken from Meredith Crescent in Balby on 6 December before being found in Intake the next day.

    But officers believe the sound bar may have been taken in another theft.
