    The M62 is still closed this morning as police, Highways England and even the army have been called in to work to get it reopened.

    It's expected to stay closed until at least early afternoon.

    West Yorkshire Police say that there are "numerous vehicles" which have been abandoned which need to be moved.

  2. M62 latest: Warm milk for trapped familypublished at 10:13 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March 2018

    Volunteers who went to the aid of people trapped in their cars on the M62 near Greater Manchester took warm milk for a five-week-old baby.

    Volunteer Eleanor Kelly, 19, said about 30 people from Milnrow trekked through the snow to take supplies to the trapped motorists - including to a father with a baby and toddler in the car.

    It's been a bit mad. We even had to warm up some hot milk for a guy stuck at the junction with two children. We knocked on his car and he had a five-week-old baby and what must have been a one or two-year-old girl in the car with him."

    The sub-zero temperatures sweeping across Yorkshire has meant many people have been unable to leave their homes.

    That's certainly the case in Doncaster this morning where I've joined the so-called 'snow angels' who are helping those affected by the bad weather.

  4. M62 update: Call for cars to be moved from diversion routepublished at 09:59 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March 2018

    The M62 is likely to stay closed until at least early afternoon and a diversion has been set up through some towns and villages in Calderdale.

    The council is asking for people who have parked along the route to move their cars as they are slowing down the diverted traffic:

  5. Sport in Yorkshire: What's on and what's off?published at 09:45 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March 2018

    The severe weather is now taking its toll on many sporting fixtures planned for this weekend.

    Football, rugby and horse racing events involving teams from Yorkshire have all fallen victim to the weather and will now be rescheduled.

    Here's a list of what we currently know is postponed:

    Football:

    • Sheffield United v Burton Albion
    • Gillingham v Rotherham United
    • Bradford City v Portsmouth
    • Guiseley v Dagenham & Redbridge
    • FC Halifax v Sutton United

    Rugby League:

    • Sheffield Eagles v London Broncos
    • Leeds Rhinos v Catalans Dragons
    • Wakefield Trinity v Huddersfield Giants (rearranged for Sunday at 15:00)

    Horse Racing:

    • Doncaster races planned for Friday 2 and Saturday 3 March

    However, as it stands Leeds United's match at Middlesbrough tonight is still due to go ahead, as is Kell Brook's boxing match with Sergey Rabchenko at the Sheffield Arena tomorrow evening.

    Also Sunday's basketball BBL Trophy final between the Sheffield Sharks and Leicester Riders is still scheduled to take place in Glasgow.

    Two people trying to take pictures of rough seas off Scarborough have been rescued by the coastguard.

    It's prompted a warning to people not to put their lives at risk trying to take a good photograph.

    Scarborough Coastguard battled dangerous waves yesterday to get to a swamped car on the town's Marine Drive.

    The Scarborough coastguard say: "Huge waves crashed over, picking up cars like match boxes throwing them at will."

    In a social media post they've appealed to people to not ignore safety warnings and say no picture or video is worth the risk.

    Senior Coastal Operations Officer Matthew Atkinson said: “While coastguard teams train for these conditions and have the right equipment we cannot stress how dangerous these conditions are."

  7. Hundreds of schools across Yorkshire remain closedpublished at 09:15 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March 2018

    Hundreds of schools across Yorkshire remain closed today as headteachers take the decision to keep staff and pupils off their sites while freezing conditions continue.

    Over 900 schools and colleges are closed for a second day with around 500 in West Yorkshire, 300 in South Yorkshire and over 100 shut in North Yorkshire today.

    Many schools are stating their intention to re-open on Monday morning but keep checking your local council website over the weekend for the latest information.

    • A6 Buxton to Chapel

    • A624 Chapel to Glossop
    • B6105 Torside Glossop to the A628
    • Monks Road between Chunal and Charlesworth
    • Rushup Edge, near Castleton
    • Winnats Pass, near Castleton

    Dozens more are considered impassable, external. Emergency services are urging people to check the route before travel and only to do so if necessary.

  9. Listen: 'Joy among chaos' as baby born on Yorkshire roadpublished at 08:57 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March 2018

    An air ambulance crew member says it made a change to be called out to something joyful yesterday, when a North Yorkshire woman gave birth to a baby girl, by the side of the road during a snow storm.

    Andrew Waring from Catterick, was driving wife, Daniella, to hospital in the snow on the A66 near Darlington, when the couple realised they wouldn't arrive in time.

    Mr Waring said he pulled over and "copied" what he had seen when he was present at the birth of his first two children.

    Baby Sienna and her mum were said to be "happy and warm" when paramedics arrived.

    Breaking

    The Army has been deployed to the M62 on the West Yorkshire/Lancashire border to assist with clearing the carriageway and to help people get to safety.

    They are currently on the motorway between junction 24 (Huddersfield) and junction 20 (Rochdale)

  12. Pennine travel disruption continuespublished at 08:24 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March 2018

    People commuting between South Yorkshire and Manchester are struggling to make their journeys this morning by road and rail due to the severe weather.

    The Hope Valley train line is closed in both directions, so services are not running between Sheffield and Stockport due the snow.

    Drivers are also unable to cross the Peak District with the Snake Pass and Woodhead Pass both shut and the westbound carriageway of the M62 motorway in West Yorkshire is operating a diversion route between junction 24 (Ainley Top) and junction 21 (Milnrow) as shown below.

    Police are urging people not to travel across the Pennines unless necessary, because of the high winds and snow.

    The west and eastbound carriageways of the M62 have been closed because of treacherous conditions.

    Highways England "strongly advise against" travelling across the Pennines, to the north west, but have just issued details of a possible diversion:

    Hundreds of people have been stranded overnight on the road between West Yorkshire and Manchester.

    Highways England say "We're doing everything we can to clear obstructions and reopen the road but it's extremely challenging."
