  1. Man, 36, arrested in Sheffield tree felling protestpublished at 11:16 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2018

    A 36-year-old man has been arrested at the site of a protest against tree felling in Sheffield.

    South Yorkshire Police said extra officers were deployed to Thornsett Road, Nether Edge, after a breach of the designated safety zone temporarily stopped work on the trees yesterday.

    The tree felling is part of Sheffield City Council's £2bn Streets Ahead project, aimed at improving roads and footpaths in the city.

    About 5,500 trees have been cut down since 2012.

    The council, which is planting new trees after removing existing ones, insists the trees earmarked for felling are either "dangerous, dead, diseased, dying, damaging or discriminatory".

    However, many of the trees classed by the council as "damaging" or "discriminatory" are healthy specimens which campaigners say should be saved. Instead they say amendments should be made to surrounding pavements and roads.

    A new out of hours service for people at risk of a mental health crisis or in mental health distress officially opens today.

    Since the sudden closure of York's Bootham Park Hospital in 2015, BBC Radio York has reported on the families who have struggled to get help when they faced a mental health crisis.

    The Haven@30 Clarence Street is a partnership between Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust and Mental Health Matters. The building is provided by the City of York Council.

    The health trust says the facility will help to co-ordinate mental health care provision for the York and Selby areas.

    Anyone aged over 16 who is experiencing mental health distress can use the service. It will be open seven days a week, 365 days a year, from 18:00 to 23:00.

    A group of students has occupied the Arts Tower at the University of Sheffield in support of striking lecturers.

    The University and College Union (UCU) is currently in dispute over pensions with Universities UUK, the employer organisation for universities nationwide.

    In a post on Facebook, the students occupying the Arts Tower in Sheffield have accused university management of being complicit in "attacks" on pensions which are "part of a wider agenda of marketisation" of the education system.

    The group has called for a meeting with Keith Burnett, the University's Vice Chancellor to discuss its demands and says the strike action will be amplified until those demands are met.

    The BBC is awaiting a response from the University.

    Thirsk School has paid tribute to two of its former students who were killed in a car crash last week.

    George Turner, from Sowerby, and Mason Pearson, from Thirsk, who were both 17, were killed on the A61 near Thirsk. They had both studied at Thirsk School and Sixth Form College.

    Headteacher Stuart Mason says they were lively and likeable lads who lived their lives fully and with much laughter.

    Research from a group of economic consultants estimates a high speed railway station in Bradford could bring in an extra £15bn to the local economy by 2060.

    It's hoped the city will be a stop on a planned new line connecting Leeds and Manchester.

    The research also suggests it could help create up to 1500 new jobs across the county.

    The man behind a letter calling for a "Love a Muslim day" is calling for others to forgive the people who wrote the Punish a Muslim day letter earlier this week.

    The first letter which was sent to homes in Bradford, as well as to prominent MPs, encouraged violence against Muslims.

    It is being investigated by counter-terrorism police.

    The UK's fourth-biggest supermarket chain, Bradford-based Morrisons, has seen its profits jump by 11% to £374m for the year to 4 February.

    Sales were up 2.8%, excluding fuel and results from stores open less than a year.

    The company said performance was "strong" despite the "challenges" of higher import costs.

    Chairman Andrew Higginson said Morrisons was now entering its third consecutive year of growth. The retailer also said it was "confident that a broader, stronger" Morrisons would continue to grow.

    Last month, Morrisons announced it would cut 1,500 middle management jobs.

    A Yorkshire hospital consultant says the number of knife injuries they're dealing with has risen significantly -and the injuries are getting more severe.

    The Northern General Hospital in Sheffield used to treat 1 or 2 knife injuries a month, but this has risen to an average of 3 a week.

    South Yorkshire Police say they have a serious knife problem in Sheffield - which is largely gang related.

    Taxpayers across York and North Yorkshire are being asked if they'd be willing to pay more for some plastics to help the environment.

    The conversation was started by Chancellor Philip Hammond, who, in his spring statement yesterday, said taxing single-use plastics might encourage people to use less of them.

    BBC Radio York has been talking to people in Scarborough, where, earlier this year, the Borough Council backed a call to phase out single-use plastics.
