    A centre-left think tank has criticised the Chancellor's spring statement claiming "too many places in the North are still being left behind".

    Philip Hammond has said the UK economy is growing at a slightly faster rate than predicted in November and borrowing is down.

    But Ed Cox from IPPR North said "There was little regard for all parts of the North of England in today’s Spring Statement."

    "Whilst we are seeing the green shoots of growth in places like Manchester and Leeds, too many places in the North are still being left behind."

  3. Uber announce five-year deal in Sheffieldpublished at 17:24 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2018

    Uber has announced that it has been granted a five year licence in Sheffield.

    Last year the city council suspended their licence after the company failed to respond to its requests.

    The controversial tech giant had applied to change the name on its Sheffield licence on 5 October 2017, and the next month the council licensing team sent a letter asking about its management practices.

    Uber said it didn't receive the correspondence.

    Fred Jones from Uber said "We’re pleased the council has recognised the changes Uber has made under our new leadership and look forward to working with them".

  4. Struggling to keep lights on - Roadworks hit traderspublished at 17:20 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2018

    Business on the main road between Halifax and Huddersfield are appealing for financial help - saying roadworks are seriously damaging trade.

    Since work to widen the road at Salterhebble Hill near Halifax began - two businesses in the area have shut down.

    Others say they're really struggling - Calderdale Council says it can't offer compensation but can help businesses with marketing during the roadworks.

    Nancy Hartley who runs OC's Coffee House says she has lost passing trade from the hospital "It's terrible, take for example yesterday, I took around £50. It's not even covering me switching on the lights."

    She says she should be taking three times that amount and that she is surviving on outside catering orders.

    Calderdale council said: "Although we haven't been able to offer financial compensation packages, a range of support is in place including help with marketing and social media."

    These pictures released by West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue show a house fire in Leeds, where the floor had collapsed.

    There were no injuries, but fire crews were hampered by thick smoke as they battled the blaze.

    The service says the crews followed "proper door entry procedures" as they went inside which meant they avoided falling through the floor.

    Police say the items were found inside a pillow case in Barnsley and that they may have been stolen.

    They were found on a footpath across from the garden centre in Darfield.

    Now officers are asking for anyone who recognises these items to get in touch.

    Two young children hid from burglars who had broken into a property and were searching for goods.

    Police in Doncaster have released CCTV images of a car they need to identify as part of an investigation into a burglary, external in the Balby area.

    At around 5.45pm on Tuesday, 27 February, two men broke into a property in Cavalier Court, Balby.

    Two children, aged 14 and nine, were inside at the time and hid from the suspects.

    A quantity of jewellery is believed to have been taken during the burglary.

    The suspects fled after discovering the children.

    Officers are keen to identify the owners of the car pictured as inquiries continue, as well as hearing from any potential witnesses.

    The 41-year-old has gone missing from hospital without completing his treatment.

    David Crawley walked out of Scunthorpe General Hospital at around 06:45 this morning.

    He's originally from the Leicester area and is thought to have links to Goole, Hull, Doncaster, Harrogate, Thames Valley and Leicester.

    Police are concerned for his welfare and safety as he was receiving treatment which he hasn’t completed.

    He is of small build, has shoulder-length hair and was wearing dark clothing and a black hat.

    He was carrying a large, distinctive orange and black rucksack.

    A woman who says she was violently raped has told a jury how she once thought her attacker might have been Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe.

    The woman, who is now in her 60s, told a jury how "monster" Peter Pickering tied her up in his van before raping her, burning her with cigarettes and saying he would kill her in the summer of 1972.

    Leeds Crown Court has heard how, three to four weeks after this alleged attack, Pickering abducted, raped and killed 14-year-old Shirley Boldy in the Barnsley area of South Yorkshire which his barrister said led him to be referred to as "The Beast of Wombwell".

    Pickering, who appeared in court via video link from Swindon Crown Court, in Wiltshire, denies rape and false imprisonment.

    The jury has been told that he was subjected to a hospital order in 1972 for the manslaughter of Shirley Boldy by reason of diminished responsibility.

    He has never been released and is currently being held at Thornford Park Hospital, in Berkshire.

    The winning code was BLUE 8300 4980 and the good news is you have until 23 August to turn your house upside-down to find it.

    University lecturers in Sheffield who are out on strike in a dispute over pensions have turned down a deal their union had backed.

    A proposed deal between the University and College Union and employers was reached last night after six days of talks.

    University vice chancellors across the country have until tomorrow to decide whether they'll support the agreement.

    But Sam Marsh from the UCU in Sheffield says members here unanimously rejected the deal because they fear their pensions would still be insecure

    There will be a book of condolence opened for BBC Radio Leeds cricket commentator Dave Callaghan tomorrow.

    He was widely regarded as the voice of Yorkshire cricket and died yesterday after being taken ill on Friday night.

    The book will be at the reception of BBC Yorkshire in Leeds from tomorrow morning until Friday and can be signed from 10:00 until 14:00.

    The book will be passed to his family.

    Mr Callaghan, who was known as Cally or DC, had worked in sports journalism for more than 45 years, working as sports editor at BBC Radio Leeds and as a commentator for Leeds United.

    Two people have been found guilty of obstructing the highway in the first trial of anti fracking protesters in North Yorkshire.

    York Magistrates' Court heard how last October, 40-year-old Julia Collings of Row Road, Northampton and 52-year-old Ronald Holloran, of Suddaby Close, Hull, sat on top of the wooden tower on a road near the proposed fracking site in Kirby Misperton.

    They refused to come down in a stand-off with the police.

    They've both been sentenced to a six-month conditional discharge, and each ordered to pay costs of £220.

    Have you lost a pet rat?

    A small female rat who has now been named Midge by RSPCA staff was found in the middle of a field in Elsecar, Barnsley, on Monday, 5 March.

    A dog walker found the rat and managed to confine her in a box before contacting the RSPCA.

    Inspector John Gibson collected the young pale grey pet and took her to the RSPCA Chesterfield Animal Centre.

    He said: "At this stage we do not know if she escaped or if she was dumped but I suspect it was the latter as she was in the middle of a field with no houses around to suggest she is a stray."

    "We are appealing for anyone with information on how this lovely rat came to be in the field to contact us on the appeal line on 0300 123 8018."

    British Transport Police have released an image of a man they believe may have information about an assault on a train between Doncaster and Sheffield earlier this month.

    The victim was travelling on the 20:19 service on Sunday, 18 February when he asked a man to move his leg as it was resting against him.

    The man then launched a torrent of abuse, threatening the victim and grabbing him around the throat, before pushing him to the ground.

    The incident was reported by a number of passengers, who said they were frightened by the behaviour, but the victim has not yet reported this to police.

    Former umpire Dickie Bird has been paying tribute to Dave Callaghan, the man widely regarded as the voice of Yorkshire cricket, who has died aged 63 following a heart attack.

    Mr Callaghan, who was known as Cally or DC, had worked in sports journalism for more than 45 years, working as sports editor at BBC Radio Leeds and as a commentator for Leeds United.

    The Yorkshire team held a minute's silence and wore black armbands in tribute to him ahead of their game with Nottinghamshire on their current tour in South Africa.

    Dickie Bird from Barnsley said the players "thought the world of him".
