    Traders saw 235,000 fewer visitors in Barnsley town centre in the three months covering the Christmas period - though the council has blamed national trends for the fall as well as the widespread disruption caused by redevelopment work.

    Footfall figures - numbers actually in the town centre, rather than customers - was down 235,000 on the previous three months, council statistics show.

    Councillors have been told that trend is a repeat of the previous year and a report states: "This is likely to be linked to national customer spending levels, poor weather and the impact of the town centre redevelopment on customer retention."

  2. Where are families of WWII Sheffield firefighters?published at 17:22 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March 2018

    There's an appeal to find the remaining families of two firefighters from Sheffield who died as they battled fires caused by German bombs during the blitz.

    Norman Elliot, who was aged 35, and Fredrick Parkes-Spencer, 36, were both firefighters with Sheffield Police Fire Brigade and were out fighting fires on the night of 12 December 1940.

    This particular raid on Sheffield started on 12 December and lasted until 15 December, thousands of tonnes of bombs were dropped.

    Now South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service want to name two new meeting rooms in their honour and they say they want to let their families know.

    A memorial service is being held today to remember University of Sheffield student, Mohammed Al-Ashry, who died in a crash near the Brook Hill roundabout pelican crossing last week.

    A candle light vigil will take place at the Octagon Concourse at 17:30 this evening.

    It will be followed by a service at the Activities Zone for friends to share their favourite moments of the 20-year-old.

    The Students' Union, external says the student will be remembered for his relaxed and friendly attitude and he will be missed dearly.

    Two drivers escaped with only minor injuries after this crash near Harrogate yesterday:

    It happened on the A61 near Dunkeswick at about 07:30 - police say they think it happened after a small silver hatchback overtook a red car.

    Officers say the silver car didn't stop at the scene as well as "a small red car" - they're now trying to find these cars.

    A Vauxhall Vectra and a Ford Focus were both severely damaged but both drivers escaped with only minor injuries.

    Both men attended hospital where they were discharged later that day.

    Police in Keighley are asking people to come forward after a group of children say they saw a woman cry for help after getting in a car.

    Officers say the woman, who is thought to have been in her late teens or early 20s, was seen getting into a people carrier, near the post office in Central Drive last Friday evening.

    As it drove off a woman could be heard shouting for help - the car had tinted or blacked out windows and a sliding door.

    The woman is described as being white, slim with shoulder length black hair and black leggings, she got into the car with an Asian man.

    Campaigners opposed to tree felling in Sheffield are accusing the City Council of not being honest over the number of trees due to be felled.

    It comes after the council was forced to reveal more details from it's £2.2bn contract with Amey by the Information Commissioner.

    In the contract it says Amey shall replace 17,500 highway trees by the end of the term - half the street trees in the city.

    Paul Selby from Save Nether Edge trees was behind the freedom of information request.

    Sheffield City Council says it's always been difficult to estimate an exact final figure of trees to be felled, and says any suggestion that 17,500 trees is a target is an incorrect interpretation of the contract.

    South Yorkshire Police say rough sleepers in Sheffield are refusing accommodation in favour of begging.

    It's thought there's around 30 people who regularly spend the night on the streets in the city.

    The charity Framework, external says people should donate money to organisations that help rough sleepers instead of giving money directly to beggars.

    A North Yorkshire holiday park business has been ordered to pay £1,548 after putting illegal advertising signs on a roadside in Howden.

    Malton Grange Lodges, of Amotherby near Malton, staked a board promoting the holiday park into the grass verge next to the Hull Road roundabout in October last year.

    The company was found guilty of fly-posting at Beverley Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 7 March.

    No-one from the company attended the hearing.

    They were fined £1,000 and was ordered to pay £448.50 costs and a victim surcharge of £100.

    Police in Sheffield are asking for help to find Tariq Azimeh, external.

    The 22-year-old is wanted in connection with suspected driving offences and an aggravated burglary reported to police in January 2018, at a property in the Burngreave area.

    He is also wanted for failing to appear at Sheffield Crown Court in connection with drugs offences in February 2018.

    Mr Azimeh is known to frequent the Burngreave area of Sheffield.

    Two adults and two children have escaped from a house fire in Harrogate.

    Firefighters say it broke out at a house in Moor Close, in Killinghall, at about 01:30 this morning.

    They say the property was fitted with smoke detectors which helped raised the alarm allowing the family to get out.

    The fire is believed to have been sparked by an electrical fault.

    This year's trophies for the Tour de Yorkshire are about to go on a bit of a tour themselves ahead of the competition in May.

    They go on display in Beverley, East Yorkshire, today and will then visit the other start and finish towns which are Doncaster, Barnsley, Ilkley, Richmond, Scarborough, Halifax and Leeds.

    The Tour de Yorkshire was launched in 2015 following Yorkshire's successful hosting of the 2014 Grand Depart leg of the Tour de France.

    The 2018 race has been extended to four days and will be held from 3 to 6 May.

    The women's race will also double in length from a one-day event, taking place on 3 and 4 May.
