  3. Sheffield singer Jarvis Cocker to perform in cavepublished at 12:58 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2018

    Former Pulp singer Jarvis Cocker has announced he'll perform two concerts in a very unusual venue - a cave in the Peak District.

    The two shows by the Sheffield singer will take place at the Peak Cavern at the beginning of April.

    Deep in the gorge below Peveril Castle, the Peak Cavern is, apparently, the largest natural cave entrance in the British Isles.

    Cocker is not the first well-known local singer to perform at the cave.

    Sheffield's Richard Hawley has also performed at the site in the past.

    The governors of Northallerton School and Sixth Form College have been sacked.

    It's after the school was placed in Special Measures following an Ofsted report in January that rated it inadequate. The governors are to be replaced by a new interim executive board.

    The school has already got a new interim headteacher, leadership team and chair of Governors.

    New interim headteacher,Keith Prytherch, is also principal of Caedmon College in Whitby.

    New systems have been introduced including a crackdown on bullying and poor behaviour.

    Naveen Judah, from Rotherham, is a prospective candidate in the Sheffield City Region Mayoral election for the South Yorkshire Save our NHS party.

    The election is due to take place on 3 May this year.

    The cost of standing is £5,000 which can go up to £8,000 if the candidate is included in a campaign brochure.

    A former Masterchef contestant from Leeds has announced he's opening a restaurant in his home city.

    Matt Healy - who's from Horsforth - is taking over The Foundry, on the outskirts of the city centre, in Holbeck.

    He was a runner-up in the professional version of the BBC cookery contest in 2016.

  7. Listen: Success for Bradford museumpublished at 11:49 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2018

    The number of schools in Bradford using the National Science and Media Museum as part of their curriculum has nearly doubled in the last three years.

    The City Council challenged the museum in 2015 to promote science, technology, engineering and maths after giving it a grant.

    Three years on, it's being praised by the authority's Regeneration Scrutiny Committee.

    Museum director, Jo Quinton-Tulloch, says one thing that has captivated visitors is a virtual reality exhibition which recreates the world's first photography exhibition from 1838.

    The fire service wants help to track down the surviving members of two Sheffield firefighters who lost their lives during the Blitz.

    Norman Elliot, who was 35-years-old, and Fredrick Parkes-Spencer, 36, were both firefighters with Sheffield Police Fire Brigade on the night of 12 December 1940.

    Codenamed Operation Crucible by the Germans the raids on 12, 13 and 15 December 1940 saw hundreds of Heinkel 111, Dornier 17 and Junker 88 bombers drop thousands of tonnes of ordnance on Sheffield.

    Dozens of firefighters from across Yorkshire and surrounding cities responded to the raids. Norman lost his life at Union Street and Fredrick was killed at Charles Street.

    South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue service , externalplans to name two new meeting rooms at its Eyre Street headquarters in memory of the firefighters and would like to let their families know.

    These two girls are missing and could be somewhere in Huddersfield according to police, who are renewing their appeal for help in finding them.

    Twelve-year-old Bernadett Berki (pictured left), and 11-year-old Szimonetta Berki (pictured right) were reported missing last Tuesday.

    They lived in the Chapel Fold area of Batley, but have links and extended family across Huddersfield.

    Officers say they think they are with three relatives – two women and a man.

  12. Freezing Sheffield tenants blame heating systempublished at 10:55 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2018

    People living at a housing block in Sheffield say they're being left in freezing cold conditions due to problems with a district heating system.

    This is Hyde Park Terrace, and residents say they are so cold it's having an impact on their health.

    John Newell has lived there for more than ten years - he says despite complaining, nothing is getting done:

    The properties are run by Sanctuary Housing.

    They say "a brand new pump was installed in early February to resolve the intermittent problems."

    The organisation says it is offering portable electric heaters to ensure temporary heating is provided while any potential fault is investigated.

  14. How should fracking applications be dealt with?published at 10:42 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2018

    A planning inspector is to consider a blueprint which will set out how local authorities in North Yorkshire will respond to future fracking applications.

    Elizabeth Ord will spend three days listening to arguments over how the county should deal with any requests to frack.

    Within the Minerals and Waste Joint Plan, the three local authorities for North Yorkshire, York and the North York Moors, set out how they'll deal with fracking applications. These include limiting the number of well pads.

    Some of it is being challenged by fracking companies and opponents.

    The Inspector will consider their arguments before making a final decision at a later date.

    But the three councils also add a cautionary note, saying their blueprint may have to be reviewed depending on the scale of any future development.

    Police in Leeds say they urgently need to find this 12-year-old boy.

    George Blanchard was last seen at about 12:10 yesterday in the Chapeltown area of the city.

    West Yorkshire Police say he is from Armley and sometimes visits Chapeltown and Harehills.

    He was last seen wearing a green parka coat, jeans and a blue backpack.

  16. Dave Callaghan: Tributes to Yorkshire's 'voice of cricket'published at 10:16 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2018

    Tributes are being paid to BBC Radio Leeds cricket commentator Dave Callaghan who has died at the age of 63.

    He was widely regarded as the voice of cricket in Yorkshire.

    Jonny Bairstow, who is also a former England and Yorkshire batsman and wicket keeper, said "He was someone that came on the bus with us, he was part and parcel of the team."

    Mr Callaghan, who worked for BBC Radio Leeds and Look North, was taken ill on Friday and died on Monday night.

    Police in Doncaster have released a CCTV image of a woman they believe may have information about a theft at a supermarket last week.

    Just before 10:50 on Monday 5 March, a 78-year-old woman reported her purse had been stolen from her handbag while in Heron Foods, The Green, Thorne.

    The purse contained bank cards and a quantity of cash.

    Officers are currently investigating, external the reported theft and they are now appealing for help identifying the woman pictured as it is thought she may be able to help with enquiries.

  18. Northern staff to hold German embassy protestpublished at 09:48 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2018

    Members of the RMT Union are expected to hold a protest outside the German embassy in London later.

    The protest is part of an ongoing dispute between the union and rail operator Northern about plans to introduce driver-only-operated trains.

    Northern is part of Germany-based railway company Deutsche Bahn.

    The firm says it wants to engage in "meaningful" discussions with the RMT.

    It says it's doing all it can to keep services running during strikes planned by the union on 26 and 29 March.

  20. Flood warnings in North Yorkshirepublished at 09:15 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2018

    Several flood warnings are currently in place for parts of North Yorkshire.

    They are for:

    • The River Derwent at Buttercrambe Mill,
    • The River Derwent at Stamford Bridge
    • The Weir Caravan Park, Kexby Bridge
    • And the River Ouse at Naburn Lock

    The warnings, from the Environment Agency, external, mean flooding is expected and immediate action is required.
