  8. 'Problem' North Yorkshire road in the spotlightpublished at 09:58 British Summer Time 27 March 2018

The future of one of North Yorkshire's most congestion-prone roads is expected to be high on the agenda at an event in Scarborough today.

    A64 from Scarborough to York

The stretch of the road which runs between York and Scarborough often grinds to a halt during school holidays and the summer months.

It's been included in Transport for the North's 30-year plan for travel across northern England.

The organisation, made up of politicians and business people, is inviting people in Scarborough to have their say on its vision to boost the region's economy.

Interim strategy director Jonathan Spruce said: "Part of the problem is the A64 is the only main route. There are other routes like the A170 that need to be improved and need to be resilient throughout the whole of the year.

"If you can spread the load of the traffic to the east coast across a number of different routes that will help improve the conditions on the A64 in the short term."

It's been developed in the company's research and development centre in York.

    BradfordImage source, Getty Images

Cases of childhood asthma have been steadily increasing since the 1950s and rates in Bradford are higher than the national average.

Researchers say air pollution from traffic is a real concern, with one in four cases blamed on breathing in nitrogen dioxide, which is produced by cars.

Dr Haneen Khreis, from the University of Leeds' Institute for Transport Studies, says a "significant" portion of cases are "largely preventable".

  20. Body cams lead to fall in violence and Taser use - Policepublished at 06:44

West Yorkshire's Assistant Chief Constable Andy Battle says the body cameras have also helped in court cases.

He says: "It was more likely people would plead guilty early which would prevent witnesses and victims having to attend court.

"Also, when members of the public made complaints against police officers they could be resolved more quickly and comprehensively."But civil liberties group Big Brother Watch say it's concerned about the cameras.
