    Controversy continues over tree felling in Sheffield.

    After complaints of a broken promise were made over the chopping down on memorial trees in Birley, the council says they had to go as they were diseased.

    Two cherry trees have been felled and will be replaced at a memorial garden on Heathfield Road according to the council, along with a further tree which will also be planted there.

    The council says it consulted residents and the Royal British Legion about its plans and says across the city there are 41 such trees which need to go, and there'll be a re-dedication to those who lost their lives in wartime once the trees are replaced.

    The teenager, who won the Toulon tournament in 2017 with England, grew up in Portugal but made the decision to represent England last summer.

    The game will take place at the Manchester City Academy Stadium.

    There's anger at the felling of two memorial trees in the Frechville area of Sheffield.

    Residents say they were promised there'd be consultation before any of the trees were felled.

    Two trees have been cut down without warning, they say.

    One of the trees was planted in memory of Gordon Booker.

    The world's fastest animal, the peregrine falcon is going to be able to be seen up close in the Yorkshire Dales.

    A free public viewpoint is opening at the bottom of Malham Cove, North Yorkshire.

    It marks the start of the 16th year of the Malham Peregrine Project run in partnership by Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority and the RSPB.

    RSPB area manager Anthony Hills said: “The viewpoint gives visitors an opportunity to see the fastest animal on the planet up close.

    "Project staff and volunteers will be on hand with telescopes, so we are hoping lots of people will come to see these impressive birds."

    Peregrine falcons first nested at Malham Cove in 1993.

    The limestone rock formation provides a good nesting environment for the birds, allowing them to keep their eggs safe while hunting .

    Climbing restrictions have been put in place for the nesting season with a small area on top of Malham Cove fenced off especially.

    The viewpoint opens this Thursday.

    A pub's plans to turn part of a Sheffield park into a beer garden have prompted 1,700 people to sign a petition opposing the idea.

    True North, which runs the Waggon and Horses, wants to rent part of Millhouses Park to create a beer garden.

    But the idea has prompted complaints from hundreds of park users.

    The Friends of Millhouses Park presented the petition to a meeting of Sheffield council's cabinet.

    The campaigners' efforts to garner opposition are being questioned by the company behind the beer garden plan.

    Councillors say no formal planning application has been submitted and there would be full consultation.

    It's been announced in the past few minutes that the York City Chairman, Jason McGill, is retiring from his role at the club.

    It follows a meeting of the York City Supporters Trust last week.

    Mr McGill had asked the trust to hand over its 25% shareholding in the club.

    Members voted no and the next day Mr McGill put his 75% shareholding in York City up for sale.

    A statement on York City's website says "Jason McGill will have no further involvement in the running of it with immediate effect."

    CEO, Jackie McNamara, is also leaving with immediate effect.

    The club says a new board of directors has been established to run the football club, with the "pressing need to produce a break even position, whilst maintaining the aspiration of success."

    A man, woman and child have been taken to hospital suffering from the effects of smoke after a fire at a block of flats in Leeds this morning.

    Initially 30 firefighters were sent to the scene at Poplar Way in Bramley.

    Everyone has now been accounted for following the fire which has been brought under control according to West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

    Emergency services were called to the fire just before 10:30 this morning.

    Six fire engines were at the scene but that was then scaled back to three fire engines.

    The government has granted three commissioners around the country responsibility for local fire and rescue services but, Julia Mulligan (pictured) is not among them.

    She launched a bid to become North Yorkshire's police, fire and crime commissioner last year, but has met opposition from both City of York Council and North Yorkshire County Council.

    A host of Yorkshire talent is taking to the stage in York this weekend to kick off the music festival season.

    York's Little Festival of Music's spring offshoot, the Acoustic and Folk Mini-Fest, is taking place at York's folk venue, The Black Swan Inn.

    The mini-fest features a mix of gypsy-celtic, traditional folk, multi-instrumentalists, and a Norse folk group.

    It's headlined by singer songwriter, Edwina Hayes, who has supported The Byrds on tour and has had her songs covered by American folk singer, Nanci Griffith.

  20. Footballer's grandad could collect betting windfallpublished at 11:19 British Summer Time 27 March 2018

    The grandfather of Yorkshire footballer Lewis Cook could be in for a £17,000 windfall if the player turns out for England against Italy tonight.

    Trevor Burlingham bet £500 his grandson, Lewis Cook, who was then 18 and breaking in to the first team at Leeds United, would go on to become an England international.

    He went into a bookies in Tadcaster, in North Yorkshire, where he was given odds of 33/1 Cook would get his first cap before turning 26.

    Four years on and it could be Trevor's lucky night if the former Tadcaster Grammar School pupil features in the international friendly at Wembley Stadium.

    Cook, 22, was called up earlier this month by Gareth Southgate, but did not feature against the Netherlands last week.

    The Bournemouth midfielder, who was born in York, is not expected to start against Italy, but could well feature as a substitute
