    People who are on the verge of homelessness in Wakefield are being offered a new support service.

    Wakefield Council has launched the scheme to point people in the direction of services that can help them out.

    The authority says that it's designed to offer a bespoke service for people and aims to find long-term solutions for people.

    The leader of the city council Coun Peter Box CBE said: “This new coordinated approach is aiming to help people by giving them the support they need to find and remain in accommodation.”

    Motorists in Harrogate - especially van owners - are being urged to be "extra vigilant" after 35 thefts in a month.

    Officers say that power tools in vans have been targeted in the Bilton, Jennyfields and Knaresborough Road areas of the town.

    Temp Det Sgt Tom Barker of North Yorkshire Police said: "It is advisable to remove any valuables items, such as expensive tools or sat nav devices, from your vehicles overnight."

    "Additional policing resource has been deployed to these areas to deter and disrupt criminals".

  3. Sheffield woman with HIV speaks out to help otherspublished at 16:25 British Summer Time 9 April 2018

    A woman from Sheffield, who got HIV from a former boyfriend, is speaking out about her experience to help other women with HIV understand it's possible to live a healthy normal life.

    Thirty-one-year old Becky (who doesn't want to give her surname) was told she was HIV positive two years ago.

    At first, she thought it meant she was going to die young and she lost six stones in weight, mainly through stress.

    A new report from The Terrence Higgins Trust and Sophia Forum has found that almost half of women living with HIV in the UK have had mental health diagnoses since an HIV diagnosis.

    But the report also found one third of women living with HIV said their lives have improved after testing positive.

    Becky is completely well and says after the initial shock of the diagnosis she's now looking forward to a long life.

    Four doctors surgeries in Scarborough say they've merged to try improve services and ease recruitment difficulties.

    The partnership includes Belgrave, Falsgrave, Peasholm and Prospect Road surgeries which have combined under one umbrella organisation, Central Healthcare, external.

    The plans were developed for patients to be able to access services during longer opening hours and for there to be some bookable weekend appointments.

    A biker who died following a collision on the A165 near Bempton last month has been named as Ryan Patrick Craven, aged 26, from Muston near Filey.

    Mr Craven’s family are being supported by specialist officers.

    Humberside Police are still appealing for witnesses and information about the accident.

    The RNLI's given details of a rescue carried out by the Filey lifeboat yesterday.

    UK Coastguard requested the launch at 16:40 yesterday, after a seven-metre pleasure boat, Jess, reported engine problems while around two miles north of Filey Brigg.

    After the lifeboat launched in misty conditions, it couldn't find any sign of the vessel either visually or on radar at the original position reported.

    It was eventually located almost three miles to the north-east. The pleasure boat was then taken in tow to Scarborough Harbour.

    Fire crews in Doncaster had an unusual call-out this morning - to rescue four cows who had wandered into a deep slurry pond and got stuck.

    All have now been returned to the safety of their barn.

    Two former Tour de Yorkshire winners have announced they'll be taking part in this year's race.

    Reigning champion, Serge Pauwels, has confirmed he'll be back to defend his title, while retired 2016 victor, Thomas Voeckler, will also be present in an ambassadorial role.

    Pauwels said: “I’ve ridden the race twice before and the atmosphere and size of the crowds are always unbelievable.

    "Winning the race last year was one of the highlights of my career and I’ll certainly be hoping to do it again."

    The Tour de Yorkshire was launched in 2015.

    More than two million spectators lined the route for the 2017 race, which was watched on television by almost 10 million viewers in 180 countries.

    Sheffield Steelers coach Paul Thompson has praised his team for their fighting spirit after they suffered a 3-1 defeat to the Cardiff Devils in ice hockey's play-off Grand Final.

    The Steelers were trailing 2-1 in the final minute but there was no repeat of the heroics from Saturday's semi-final when they came back from 4-2 down in the final period against Nottingham.

    This time, opponents Cardiff scored a late empty net goal to secure their first play-off title in 19 years.

    Fire fighters say they've found nothing suspicious about a fire which largely destroyed a garden centre in North Yorkshire.

    Strikes in Stokesley was engulfed by flames on Friday night, causing millions of pounds worth of damage.

    Forty firefighters and eight engines were at the scene throughout the night.

    The owners say they want to re-open at a temporary site as soon as possible.

    Andy Creasy, from North Yorkshire Fire Service, says "initial investigations so far have come up with nothing suspicious," but he adds "nothing can be ruled out at this stage".

    York swimmer James Wilby has won a Bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Australia.

    He came third in the final of the mens' 50m breast stroke, after finishing third-fastest in yesterday's semis.

    Wilby took silver in the final of the 100m breast stroke and gold in the 200m breaststroke last week.

    Yorkshire farmers say they're facing one of the toughest springtimes they've seen in decades.

    Heavy snowfall followed by melting snow have left some unable to access land for almost a month.

    Some farmers in North Yorkshire say they're concerned they could end up losing all their crops.

    James Copeland, from the National Farmers' Union, says across the region "all livestock farmers are looking at what crops they've got and what stocks they've got of fodder.

    "They're having to buy in a lot more feed which comes with additional costs."

    Sheffield Central MP Paul Blomfield is pressing for a new Royal Navy ship to be named after the city, the fourth such ship to carry the name.

    The first HMS Sheffield saw service in World War II and was one of the Royal Navy pursuit ships that tracked down the German battleship Bismarck.

    The second HMS Sheffield (pictured) was badly damaged in a missile strike by the Argentinian air forces during the Falklands conflict in 1982 and sank in heavy seas while being towed towards South Georgia.

    The third HMS Sheffield was sold to the Chilean Navy in 2003 and renamed Almirante Williams.

    The Royal Navy’s new Type 26 Frigates are being named after UK cities, with HMS Glasgow, HMS Belfast and HMS Cardiff already named.

    Mr Blomfield said: “It’s time for our city to be recognised with a new HMS Sheffield.

    "I’m pleased to add my support to a campaign that has got backing from across the city.”

    Pontefract's James Willstrop's long wait for Commonwealth gold is over after he beat New Zealand's Paul Coll 3-0 in the men's singles squash final on the Gold Coast.

    Willstrop twice had to settle for silver behind compatriot Nick Matthew in Delhi and Glasgow but the 34-year-old is at last on the top step.

    The Yorkshireman made light work of the final with intelligent play keeping Coll constantly off balance.

    He said: "It's the stuff you dream of. You wake up and all day think if only.

    "The brilliant performances I've had in my career, there have been maybe 25 where it's just great and everything clicks, and I've had one today."
