    Sheffield Heeley MP, Louise Haigh, Labour's spokeswoman on policing, has said cuts to policing cannot be discounted as a factor in a rise in violent crime in cities around the country.

    It follows a leaked Home Office document suggesting a fall in police numbers is likely to have contributed to a rise in serious crime.

    The Home Secretary, Amber Rudd, said she hadn't seen the document.

    The government launches its strategy for combating violent crime today.

    Denise Hunter from Seamer was last seen by her family at her home at 09:50 yesterday and hasn't been seen since.

    The 52-year-old is thought to be on foot, but walks with difficulty due to an ankle injury.

    A play starring a North Yorkshire schoolgirl picked up three gongs at last night's Olivier Awards.

    Twelve-year-old Ava Bounds, who goes to Harrogate's Ashville College, plays the role of Nunu Carney in The Ferryman.

    The play, set during The Troubles in Northern Ireland, was named the best new play at the biggest event in the UK theatrical calendar.

    The Troubles were a violent 30-year conflict framed by a civil rights march in Londonderry on 5 October 1968 and the the Good Friday Agreement on 10 April 1998.

    The drama, set in rural Londonderry in 1981, won best director for Sam Mendes, while Laura Donnelly was named best actress.

    Leeds gymnast Nile Wilson has clinched the horizontal bar title to win his third gold of the Commonwealth Games.

    Wilson's score of 14.533 was half a point down on his qualifying mark but still enough to beat team-mate James Hall.

    The 22-year-old will leave Australia with a total of five medals having won silver on the parallel bars earlier on today.

    Wilson said: "It's been an incredible week and I'm very exhausted right now.

    "I delivered again and I'm so happy and buzzing. I can't wait for the Europeans and the Worlds, but I will be celebrating for the next six days."

    Two months after fans' hopes of an Arctic Monkeys gig at Hillsborough Park in Sheffield were dashed, the band have announced they WILL be playing their home city.

    The rumour mill went into overdrive in February after a planning application by SJM Concerts, the band's promoters, was submitted for an event at Hillsborough Park.

    But just days later, it was withdrawn.

    Now Arctic Monkeys have announced on twitter there'll be two gigs in Sheffield in September:

    Police officers in West Yorkshire say it's "unbelievable" four people survived when planks of timber skewered the car they were in after it hit a fence.

    Officers posted pictures on Twitter of the wrecked vehicle, which crashed in the Stourton area of Leeds shortly after midnight.

    They said: "Four of the luckiest people our officers have ever seen following an RTC.

    "Unbelievable how this did not result in multiple fatalities."

    The brother of a man stabbed to death in Leeds says carrying a weapon has "become part of youth culture".

    Robert Lloyd's brother, Kieran, was stabbed to death in Harehills in Leeds in 2013.

    His comments follow a leaked Home Office report which says a fall in police numbers is likely to have contributed to a rise in serious violent crime.

    Knives are the most common cause of death in murders in the UK.

    Mr Lloyd says young people nowadays think using knives in fights is "normal":

    North Yorkshire's biggest football game at the weekend saw York City take on Harrogate Town.

    York dropped out of the national league last season to National League North, the sixth tier of English football.

    In the first ever competitive meeting at Bootham Crescent between the two sides, York were beaten by their neighbours 2-0.

    The win keeps Town in second place, behind leaders Salford and the automatic promotion spot.

    By that narrowest of margins Nile Wilson is denied a third gold medal of the Games. He'll have to settle for silver. He is given exactly the same score as gold medal winner Marios Georgiou but misses out on gold due to his execution score.

    Wilson, from Leeds, has still got one more chance for gold later this morning. He must be knackered.

  15. Fire crews save cows from 'sticky end'published at 08:55 British Summer Time 9 April 2018

    About 25 firefighters have rescued four cows who got stuck in a huge pool of slurry at a farm near Doncaster.

    The cows were stranded up to their necks after wandering into the slurry pond overnight at Bank House Farm in Thorne.

    Fire crews were called at about 05:00 this morning and spent the next couple of hours dragging the cows free from the sticky substance.

    All the cows are now safely back in the barn.
