Spit and polish: Clean-up for Captain Cookpublished at 08:10 British Summer Time 9 April 2018
A statue of 18th Century explorer Captain Cook in Whitby is to be given a bit of a clean up.
The bronze statue's dominated the West Cliff in Whitby for more than 100 years.
Its restoration will be completed before the 250th anniversary this July of the explorer's first voyage.
At the age of 17, Cook moved to Whitby and in 1755 enlisted in the Royal Navy, serving in North America where he learned to survey and chart coastal waters.
His achievements in mapping the Pacific, New Zealand and Australia radically changed western perceptions of world geography.
Quote MessageThe statue will be a credit to Whitby for many years to come."
