The Leader of Sheffield Lib Dems has been told he can't vote in the local elections - until he turns 18 - even though he's in his mid-40s.

Cllr Shaffaq MohammedImage source, Liberal Democrats

Cllr Shaffaq Mohammed, who is 45, received a letter from his own authority saying he wouldn't be able to vote until he was old enough.

The letter, from Election Services Manager John Tomlinson, says: "I am writing to apologise that you were sent a poll card for the elections on 3 May but as you will not be 18-years-old by then, you will not be able to vote."

The letter says there was an error with a process on the electoral register and adds: "We have now corrected the error and you will be able to vote when you become 18."

Cllr Mohammed says he can see the funny side but is concerned more letters have been sent and may confuse or deter voters.

"Obviously this is a clerical error and it did bring a smile to my face. Elections in Sheffield are always close and these letters could undermine democracy."

Wentworth Castle Gardens, a Grade II listed tourist attraction near Barnsley, closed a year ago today but the BBC understands there may be some "good news" at the end of May regarding its future.

Restored conservatory at Wentworth Castle Gardens

More than £20m has been spent on the gardens in the past few years, with 20 historic buildings and monuments restored.

Wentworth Castle and Stainborough Park Heritage Trust received lottery funding to restore the dilapidated Victorian conservatory which re-opened in 2013.

But the Trust struggled to cover running costs and when Barnsley Council withdrew funding, it said it could no longer afford to stay open and the Gardens were closed to the public.

I've been to find out how local people feel about the closure and what the future may hold for the Gardens:

The Save a Life app tells you the location of your nearest defibrillator and provides guidance in the event of someone suffering a cardiac arrest.

Curtis Randle, from Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, was walking through the Market Place when he suffered a cardiac arrest in May 2016.

By coincidence, it happened right next to the town’s very first public access defibrillator.

An off-duty GP came to his rescue, closely followed by ambulance crews.

Curtis said: “The defibrillator undoubtedly saved my life and I’m so grateful that it was there when I needed it.

“I’m really pleased the app has been launched, because it’s so important that people are made aware of defibrillators and how they really can make a difference.”
