A meeting held by Sheffield's tree campaigners today has announced it will be a seeking a new judicial review against Sheffield City Council.

    Sheffield tree campaigners at meeting

The Sheffield Trees Action Group said it would be seeking the review on the grounds of what it says is Amey's non disclosure of previous health and safety breaches before the contract with Sheffield City Council was signed.

In response we've had this statement from Amey and the Council:

    Quote Message

We are aware of the H&S conviction in 2011, and indeed were aware of it prior to contract award, and we are still satisfied that there has been no breach by Amey of the PQQ process or the Bid Process Agreement. In relation to the most recent H&S Contravention Notices given to Amey by the HSE, Amey are complying with the terms of the PFI Contract by notifying us of the Contravention Notices and continuing to update the Council on the ongoing discussions relating to the alleged contraventions. Therefore there are no grounds for termination of the PFI contract.

  4. Village development questions in Barnsleypublished at 15:05 British Summer Time 20 April 2018

Planners proposing new housing developments in a string of villages across Barnsley from Cawthorne to Little Houghton have been questioned about why some previously dismissed as unsuitable are now included while a prime contender on an earlier assessment has now been ruled out.

The apparent anomalies were raised at an examination hearing in front of a Government planning inspector, who will decide whether Barnsley Council's future plans for housing and employment can be adopted as formal policy said the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS).

Achitect Michael Clynch also launched an attack on the council's whole philosophy in assessing villages for potential development. He told the hearing:

    Quote Message

I am concerned about the whole sustainability issue. Everyone has a car in a village, its a fact of life. This plan is based on outdated criteria of how villages now operate. In Skipton, planners have incorporated massive housing developments. We are missing a trick. Instead of trying to hang on to what we have now we should be looking at what we can achieve."

How about this for an unlikely group of pals.

These baby badgers and Phoebe the baby fox have become firm pals after all being rescued and then taken in by the Whitby Wildlife Sanctuary.

The orphans sleep in the same bed, eat from the same bowl and play together.

Alex Farner, founder of the Whitby Wildlife Centre, told me the badgers were found near Meltham in West Yorkshire wandering through a woodland aged just three weeks old.

The baby fox turned up in a box at a vets in Leeds.

Alex said the people who spotted the badgers watched them for four hours, struggling on a steep bank without mum, who it's thought was killed after being hit by a car.

She says: "They were so young they didn't even have teeth."

"Foxes and badgers would never mix in the wild," she added. "But these three were wild animals without their mothers, all of a similar size and we thought we could place them together as long as we kept a close eye on them."

Now at six weeks old the fox and badgers are happy and safe to be left playing at sleeping together, but Alex says "they'll be separated when they're older and released back to the wild."

The site off Delves Lane near Wales village includes 129 pitches for caravans and 34 pitches for tents.

Councillors concluded the scheme would have such a positive impact on tourism and the local economy that it constituted "very special circumstances" allowing the green belt rule to be overridden.

  13. Rotherham Council told to apologise to abuse whistleblowerpublished at 12:36 British Summer Time 20 April 2018

Rotherham council has been criticised by the government Ombudsman over the way it investigated complaints into the charity Swinton Lock which supports CSE survivors, and the woman behind it, Jayne Senior.

It's after Jayne Senior complained that council officials raided her charity without proper explanation.

She had blown the whistle on how the council, police and social services had failed to deal with the abuse of at least 1,400 children.

The ombudsman found the council delayed investigating the issues, was slow to provide evidence of the complaints and didn't keep the charity regularly informed of progress.

Rotherham Council has now been told it should apologise to both Jayne Senior and the Swinton Lock charitable organisation.

  14. Man who shot woman in sex game has sentence reducedpublished at 12:17 British Summer Time 20 April 2018

A man who accidentally shot a woman in the vagina during a sex game has had his sentence reduced by appeal judges.

The 48-year-old went on the run after the antique weapon - an antique rat-eliminating shotgun - went off in a hotel bedroom in Stockport.

The woman suffered "catastrophic" internal injuries.

He was traced back to Yorkshire and sent to jail. But the judge at the court of appeal said there were a number of reasons that the original sentence was excessive and the woman was "party to the dangerous act".

  16. Man who will never eat meal again to run marathonpublished at 11:44 British Summer Time 20 April 2018

A man from Halifax who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, meaning he can't eat normal food, is preparing to run the London Marathon this weekend.

    Gary TaylorImage source, PA

Gary Taylor is planning to run the 26.2 mile race with his feeding tube to show people you can live "a relatively normal life" despite medical challenges.

The 46-year-old electrical engineer was diagnosed with a rare parapharyngeal schwannoma tumour in his neck in 2016.

It turned out to be benign, but the invasive surgery he needed to deal with it meant that Mr Taylor will probably never eat a normal meal again.

    Quote Message

You will sometimes feel down. You will sometimes feel afraid and you will come across hurdles that you need to work around, but you can do anything you used to do."

  19. Young people and landscape, Doncasterpublished at 11:08 British Summer Time 20 April 2018

Actress Dominique Moore visits forests, moors and parkland around Doncaster to find out how young people here are using the countryside.

Rural landscapes in this area tend to be sandwiched between motorways, airports and industrial parks, but there are places to escape for a breath of fresh air, if you look carefully. And in Bawtry Forest, you won't just find trees. You might also bump into a couple of tanks or a helicopter from a film set, at the home of the largest paintballing centre in Europe. Owner Karl Broadbent says that young people think about the outdoor spaces through the prism of the computer games they play at home.

Being tied to a screen can adversely affect your mental health, according to young graduates Megan Humphries and Helen Earnshaw, who are part of the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust's 'Tomorrow's Natural Leaders' scheme. They are setting up an eco-therapy project to enable people to improve their mental well-being in the outdoors at the Trust's Potteric Carr Reserve.

Dominique also meets 19 year old Suzanne Lines, an apprentice with Flying Futures, at Hatfield Moor. Learning survival skills on the National Citizen's Service course helped her discover a passion for the outdoors which she had never suspected. Now she leads groups of young people in alternative provision education, building fires and searching for adders on the Moor.

The last visit is to meet the lions at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, which hosts 'ranger' training for young people on week-long courses in animal husbandry. The large carnivores are always popular with teenagers, according to Rachel Ford. But it's a shock for Dominique to go behind the scenes and visit the Meat Store. Hand-feeding the wallabies, on the other hand, is hard to resist.
