    A self-confessed Nazi who called for the genocide of Jewish people during a rally in North Yorkshire has been jailed for 3 years.

    The 22-year-old from Lancashire - who can't be named for legal reasons - was found guilty of two counts of stirring up racial hatred following a trial in January.

    He committed the offences in 2016 during a gathering of far-right extremists, called the Yorkshire Forum for Nationalists, and also during a demonstration in Blackpool.

    During today's hearing at Preston Crown Court, he nodded his head in the dock as the Judge questioned whether he still held the same views as when he gave the two speeches

  3. Cases of measles on the rise in Bradfordpublished at 15:38 British Summer Time 18 April 2018

    People in Bradford are being told to make sure they and their children are up-to-date with their MMR vaccine after it hads been confirmed that cases of measles are rising in the city.

    Public Health England (PHE) says there have been nine confirmed and three suspected cases of measles since the end of March in Bradford.

    Measles is a highly infectious viral illness, so anyone with symptoms is also being advised to stay at home and phone their GP or NHS 111 for advice.

    Symptoms include:

    • high fever
    • sore, red, watery eyes
    • coughing
    • aching and feeling generally unwell
    • a blotchy red brown rash, which usually appears after the initial symptoms.

    If you're worried you or your child may have it, PHE advise that you phone for more help and not to go to the surgery or A&E, to prevent the illness spreading further.

    Members of the University and College Union (UCU) at the Hull College Group have voted to back strike action.

    Staff and students in Hull joined a protest earlier today over plans to cut 231 jobs and make changes to courses, external.

    79% of the staff who voted at the college’s three campuses in Hull, Harrogate and Goole backed strike action. Turnout was 57%.

    Staff will meet tomorrow to discuss potential strike dates and to vote on a motion of no-confidence in chief executive, Michelle Swithenbank.

    The University and College Union (UCU) said today's vote showed the strength of anger felt.

  7. Fines for nuisance calls from two Yorkshire companiespublished at 15:21 British Summer Time 18 April 2018

    Big fines have been imposed by the Information Commissioner’s Office on two West Yorkshire firms which bombarded people with illegal cold calls.

    Bradford-based Energy Saving Centre Ltd made seven million calls over seven months and has been ordered to pay £250,000.

    At least 34,000 of those calls were to people who had signed up to a service which prevents companies from cold-calling them.

    Another firm, Approved Green Energy Solutions of Brighouse, was fined £150,000 for making over 300,000 calls.

    A man has been charged with murdering a man who was found stabbed in an alleyway next to a church.

    Tommy Ferris, 28, from London, was found injured off Smannell Road, Andover, Hampshire, shortly before 01:00 BST on Friday.

    He was pronounced dead on arrival at Southampton General Hospital.

    Zandrae Smith, 20, of Bradford, West Yorkshire, has been charged with murder and is due to appear before Basingstoke magistrates later.

  9. Police to take part in 'trees meeting' in Sheffield.published at 14:47 British Summer Time 18 April 2018

    The ongoing dispute about the felling of thousands of trees in Sheffield has prompted an effort to get all sides together for talks.

    Instigated by the Sheffield Tree Action Groups, the event this Friday now has confirmed police attendance.

    The city council however says it will not be taking part, citing the current period leading up to the local elections vote in May as being inappropriate timing.

    The council contractor involved in the felling, AMEY, hasn't publicly stated whether or not they'll attend.

  11. 'Unpopular' loose chippings for 70 miles of Harrogate roadspublished at 14:31 British Summer Time 18 April 2018

    A series of "unpopular" roadworks over 70 miles of roads in the Harrogate area begin on Friday.

    Speed limits of 20mph will be introduced while the process of surface dressing, which involves spraying bitumen onto the road surface and covering it with a layer of chippings, is undertaken.

    Among the stretches being treated are Harrogate bypass, Knaresborough bypass, Boroughbridge Road in Knaresborough and Ripon bypass.

    County Councillor Don Mackenzie, said: “It's comparatively low-cost at a fifth of the price of resurfacing.

    “We know the process is unpopular with some drivers, mainly because of loose chippings, but the speed of the operation and its long-term benefits, are important factors."

    The work's expected to continue until August.

  13. Teenagers deny plot to kill students in schoolpublished at 14:06 British Summer Time 18 April 2018

    Two teenagers from Yorkshire have denied plotting to kill students at a school.

    The boys - both aged 15 - have pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to murder, at a hearing at Leeds Crown Court.

    Neither of the defendants nor the school can be named for legal reasons.

    They've been remanded in custody - and will go on trial at the start of next month.

    Earlier we told you about a team of volunteers working to reduce the thousands of tonnes of food thrown away in Yorkshire every year.

    North Yorkshire's "rotters," encourage people to compost waste food and the county council wants to recruit more people.

    One woman keen to cut down on food waste is Tessa Cook in Scarborough.

    She came up with a phone app called Olio, which is helping to reduce the amount of wasted food.

    Last month, a gay couple from Newcastle were refused entry to a bar in Leeds, with bouncers saying it was for "mixed couples only".

    Hundreds of people contacted the BBC to say it was normal for groups of men - gay or straight - to be turned away from bars.

    A teenage boy says he was sexually assaulted as he got on a train in South Yorkshire.

    Police say the boy was getting on to a train at Sheffield bound for Norwich when he was sexually touched by a man.

    Officers say the boy confronted the man as other passengers tried to get on the 16:40 train to Norwich on 29 March.

    They're now appealing for witnesses, external to what happened.

    The wanted man is white and in his fifties with shoulder length thin grey hair. He was wearing a brown parka-style coat.

    The Equality Act of 2010, external, which applies in England, Scotland and Wales, made it illegal to discriminate against someone for a range of reasons - including their age, race, sexuality, or gender.

    The act protects consumers, as well as workers and other groups. So are bars breaking the law?

    "Theoretically, if the sole reason for turning [a group] away is their gender, then you could potentially mount a claim," says Maria Chadwick, discrimination department manager at Stephensons law firm, external.

    However, there is a possible defence for bar owners and their door staff: That their actions did not amount to discrimination but were instead "a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim".
