    People who have signed a petition to reduce the speed limit near a school just off the M1 at Thorpe Hesley in Rotherham say they fear children will one day "be seriously injured or killed."

    A campaign has begun for the speed limit on Upper Wortley Road to be reduced from 40mph to 30mph.

    The road, a quarter of a mile off the M1, is a main route into Rotherham and it's claimed some motorists haven't been slowing down sufficiently.

    Today the pupils at Thorpe Hesley Primary School are presenting their case to the Mayor of Rotherham.

    A house in Bradford has been searched as part of an international investigation into a criminal website blamed for launching more than four million cyber attacks around the world.

    The website, Webstresser.org has been taken down because of the investigation, it was used in attempts to crash banks in the UK in November last year.

    The operation involving the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) and others has blocked criminals from buying attacks that have had huge costs for businesses.

    Six suspected members of the gang behind the site have today been arrested with computers seized in the UK, Holland and elsewhere.

    Investigators from the NCA's National Cyber Crime Unit searched an address in Bradford linked to a suspect who is believed to have used webstresser to attack seven of the UK's biggest banks.

    Doncaster, Barnsley and Rotherham councils are to share £3.4m to cut congestion and improve roads.

    The money comes from the Sheffield City Region Combined Authority, which represents all four South Yorkshire councils.

    Yet Sheffield has been told it won't be getting any money from this round of spending, because of the 'large discrepancy in the amount of borrowing being invested in the Supertram network' in the city.

    In Doncaster £1.3m will help to cut congestion and make improvements to St Mary's roundabout, as well as accessibility and traffic flow changes in the town centre.

    South Yorkshire Police's mounted section has moved back into the county barely two years after the horses and riders were switched to shared premises in Wakefield.

    They were moved out under a cost-saving plan with the West Yorkshire force.

    The new Chief Constable of South Yorkshire, Stephen Watson, has taken the decision to switch the horses and their riders back to Ring Farm at Cudworth in Barnsley.

    About £275,000 of improvements to the base will be made.

  6. Rotherham child sex abuse operation 'continues to grow'published at 10:43 British Summer Time 25 April 2018

    There's been a big rise in the number of cases being investigated in connection with South Yorkshire Police's response to historical allegations of child sexual abuse in Rotherham.

    The police watchdog says the number of investigations has grown "significantly" during the last year.

    Operation Linden, external, the Independent Office for Police Conduct's (IOPC) operation looking into the allegations, grew to 98 investigations by the beginning of April this year.

    That's compared with 62 investigations at the same point last year.

    A total of 45 investigation reports have been completed and 33 current and former police officers remain under notice that they are being investigated, the IOPC says.

  7. National Science and Media Museum visitor numbers uppublished at 10:24 British Summer Time 25 April 2018

    Bradford's National Science and Media Museum is celebrating its highest visitor numbers since 2010.

    Over half-a-million people came through the doors of the museum, previously the National Media Museum, between April 2017 and the end of March this year.

    That's up 100,000 on the previous 12-month period.

    The figures follow the re-branding of the museum and a series of new exhibits like Tim Peake's space capsule.

    A lorry driver has died at the wheel as he was turning his HGV around in Bradford.

    The man, in his 50s, was found "unresponsive at the wheel" at about 00:40 yesterday morning on Station Road in Cullingworth.

    It's thought he was completing a u-turn in his lorry which then came to a standstill.

    Emergency services were called but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

    Police say they want anyone who saw the lorry to get in touch.

    The demolition of a much-loved toy shop in Sheffield is under way as part of the redevelopment of the Moor area.

    The name of Redgates has a special place in the hearts of many people in the city who were children and parents from the late 1960s onwards.

    The store, on Furnival Gate, opened 50 years ago - back in 1968 - and it was one of the biggest toy stores in the whole region - with four floors of toys:

    There are big celebrations in Scarborough today following the football club's promotion after their first season based back in the town.

    The original Scarborough FC folded 11 years ago and until moving to their new stadium last year they were playing 20 miles away in Bridlington.

    The club's new stadium (pictured) forms part of a £50m development built on a former park and ride site.

    Last night, a crowd of nearly 1,000 fans saw Scarborough Athletic beat Glossop 2-1, meaning the club goes up to step three of non-league football, the Evo-Stik Premier.

    A film version of a classic Bronte novel starring a Chinese actor could bring a major tourism boost to the home village of the world famous literary sisters, it's being claimed.

    David Wilson, head of Bradford City of Film, says a new version of Wuthering Heights starring a Chinese Heathcliff could work wonders for visitor numbers in Haworth (pictured).

    Mr Wilson's comments come during a visit to West Yorkshire by the Secretary General of the Chinese Film Association.

    Rao Shuguang, who's in Bradford as part of China Film Week, has said he wants to create film partnerships with the city.

    And Mr Wilson says he believes the Bradford area can have a big part to play in Chinese cinema in the future.

    A new film of Wuthering Heights featuring a Chinese actor playing Heathcliff would "guarantee tourism to Haworth would increase", he says.

    A tribute football match is to be held to mark what would have been the 18th birthday of a teenager who was killed in a car crash in North Yorkshire in March, it's been announced.

    The game's being planned by the friends of George Turner (pictured left), the 17-year-old who died last month after the crash on the A61 near his home town of Thirsk.

    Mason Pearson (right), 17, was also killed in the crash and his friends are helping to organise the charity match, which will be played in June.

    A North Yorkshire farmer who takes on asylum seekers and refugees to help during lambing season says it is "one of the best things I've done".

    Rodney Beresford, who farms 500 sheep on hills at Ribblehead, welcomes about 100 people a year from places including Kuwait, Somalia and Nigeria.

    He takes part in a scheme offering work at his farm for a day.

    "It is surprising how many farmers from different countries come and help you learn something," he said.

    The visits are arranged by the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust charity.

    The scheme has been running for 11 years and offers a "small financial incentive" to farmers.

    The family of a 19-year-old university student who fell to his death from an abandoned Sheffield hotel said efforts to prevent access to the building were "disgraceful" and an "accident waiting to happen".

    Thomas Rhodes, from Melton Mowbray, died in March last year as a result of multiple injuries he suffered falling from the abandoned Hallam Towers building in Fulwood.

    An inquest has heard there had been an "epidemic" level of trespass at the site and questions were raised about security at the location.

    Mr Rhodes, a geography student at the University of Sheffield, was found dead on 27 March outside the building on Manchester Road.

    The inquest heard his body was discovered by Alina Akhtar and Yaseen Khaddouri, who gained access to the site by squeezing through a gap in the fence.

    More concerns have been raised about a planned trip by Leeds United to Myanmar next month.

    The two games scheduled for May are in areas of the country, formerly known as Burma, in which Foreign and Commonwealth Office guidance is to "check travel advice before travelling, external".

    Nearly 700,000 of Myanmar's Rohingya Muslim minority have fled the country since August because of ongoing military operations in Rakhine.

    Myanmar's government, which does not give the Rohingya citizenship and sees them as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, says it is fighting militants and has denied targeting civilians.

    Fears about the Leeds United tour have been raised by a UK organisation which represents Rohingya Muslims.

    Deen Mohammed Noori, the President of Arakan Rohingya Organisation UK, says he believes it will be "regretful" if the visit goes ahead while the crisis there continues.

    "Everybody wants to make a good name for the team, and for the society," he said.

    "But what we have to realise is that we have to make sure everything's okay there before we go to Myanmar."

    The club says players and coaches will run football sessions with local children and will visit cultural sites.

    A Yorkshire naturist swimming club whose website said children could take part in swims is being investigated by a council.

    Ryedale Naturist Club in North Yorkshire, which holds twice-monthly swims at Derwent Pool in Norton, said children could attend if accompanied "by a parent or guardian".

    A statement released on behalf of Ryedale Naturist Club, which has since removed the website post, said accompanied children "are safe attending a naturist swim".

    Ryedale District Council said "an urgent review" would be held.
