  2. Rotherham fracking test planning inquiry continuespublished at 06:56 British Summer Time 25 April 2018

    A public inquiry will continue today into whether petrochemical company Ineos can carry out exploratory drilling at Harthill, near Rotherham.

    Its initial application was rejected by Rotherham Council's planning board in January, and referred to the Planning Inspectorate.

    Protesters claim the drilling will lead to environmental and safety concerns, including increased traffic and pollution.

    Ineos want to dig a 1.7-mile well to extract rock samples for testing to see if it is viable.

    Councillors from the borough's planning board are expected to give evidence to a government planning inspector later to explain why they object.

  3. Crews damping down after Thirsk blazepublished at 06:30 British Summer Time 25 April 2018

    Five fire crews have tackled an overnight blaze at an industrial unit near Thirsk.

    At its height, about 25 firefighters from Thirsk, Ripon, Boroughbridge, Easingwold and Northallerton were dealing with the blaze which started earlier this morning at the unit in Dalton.

    The incident has now been scaled down to three fire engines and crews are "damping down and checking for hotspots", according to North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue service.

    Kieran Blythe hasn't been seen since leaving his home in the Woodside area of the city at 16:30 yesterday.

    He was wearing a black jacket, dark bottoms and white trainers.

    Police say "he is known to frequent Bradford and Leeds city centres and Pudsey."

    West Yorkshire Police have questioned the horticultural skills of a potential cannabis farmer after a raid today:

    The force's Bradford South team tweeted a picture of the fruits of their raid., external

    They included a dig at the person who had set up the room to grow cannabis.

    They said "Think the grower isn’t very green fingered".

    A woman who went out drinking and left her two barefoot children to wander the streets in their pyjamas has been given a suspended jail sentence.

    Bradford Crown Court heard the youngsters - both aged under five - were helped by a passing lorry driver.

    Prosecutor Richard Walters said the driver was horrified when he found out the children had crossed one of the busiest roads in the city.

    The woman - who cannot be named - received a 14-month sentence suspended for two-years.

    She was also ordered to do 250 hours unpaid work and comply with a 30-day rehabilitation order.

  16. Charity questions Leeds United's tour of Myanmarpublished at 17:05 British Summer Time 24 April 2018

    Amnesty International are questioning Leeds United's plan to travel to Myanmar for a post-season tour because of the country's "brutal" human rights record.

    The two games scheduled for May are in areas in which Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) guidance is to "check travel advice before travelling".

    Amnesty International UK director Kate Allen said "It certainly seems like an odd choice of country to choose to tour,"

    "Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya have fled crimes against humanity in Rakhine State to neighbouring Bangladesh; those who remain continue to live under a system amounting to apartheid."

  18. Drugs raid in York after concerns raisedpublished at 16:43 British Summer Time 24 April 2018

    Police carried out a drugs raid in York this morning, and left their calling card to let everyone know they'd been.

    They seized cannabis and syringes "containing a brown substance" during the operation in Dale Street off Nunnery Lane this morning.

    Officers acted after a tip-off from neighbours but no one has been arrested.

    A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: "This morning’s warrant shows we can and will act on community concerns and take proactive enforcement action.”
