    A man has been charged after a series of armed robberies in Sheffield and Rotherham.

    Shane Murphy, of no-fixed-address, has been charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery.

    It comes after a number of convenience stores were targeted over a four-month period this year.

    Mr Murphy is due in court today.

    Police are hunting a man who tried to snatch a four-year-old girl from the street as she was walking with her mother in Leeds yesterday.

    The attempt happened just after 11:30 as they were walking along Lodge Lane in Beeston.

    They were crossing the road when a man came up to them from behind, picked up the girl and carried her off across the road.

    The mother chased him and confronted him, a passing van driver also stopped and intervened, the man let go of the girl unharmed and ran off.

    West Yorkshire Police say they're looking for a white man, aged 25 to 40, about 5ft 9ins tall, large build, with short mousy brown hair.

    He was wearing black work trousers and a blue or black jacket and appeared to have mental health problems.

    Officers say they are "increasing their patrols of the area to reassure the community."

  4. Aseel Al-Essaie murder: Mother pays tributepublished at 13:34 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

    "An intelligent, funny, loving young man" is how the mother of a murdered man has described him.

    She spoke after three men were jailed for life today at Sheffield Crown Court for murdering 23-year-old Aseel-Al-Essaie as he sat in his car outside his sister's engagement party.

    Mr Al-Essaie mother, Aneasa, said: "Everyone that knew him loved him.

    "Aseel was taken from us at such a young age. Murdered by selfish cowards in broad daylight, on the very day he was due to attend his younger sister’s engagement party.

    "No sentence will ever reflect the pain and heartache these senseless cowards have inflicted upon my family."

    Matthew Cohen, 29, Dale Gordon, 33, and Keil Bryan, 32, were ordered to each serve a minimum term of 30 years for Mr Al-Essaie's murder.

    Three men have each been jailed for life for shooting dead a 23-year-old as he sat in his car outside his sister's engagement party.

    Matthew Cohen, 29, Dale Gordon, 33, and Keil Bryan, 32,(pictured L-R), all from Sheffield, were convicted of murdering Aseel Al-Essaie following a trial at Sheffield Crown Court earlier this month.

    Mr Al-Essaie was shot at point blank range on Daniel Hill, Sheffield, on 18 February 2017.

    The three men, all from Sheffield, have been told they must serve a minimum of 30 years in prison for the killing.

    The 17-year-old, from Morley, was last seen at the Posh Nosh takeaway in Wyke.

    Police said he is is known to have strong links to the Wyke area and was wearing a blue tracksuit on the day he went missing.

    Harry (pictured) cares for his brother, who has learning difficulties, as well as looking after his Mum.

    He was nominated by the Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire and will be one of 1,000 members of the public to have been invited to the grounds of Windsor Castle for the wedding.

    The local Rotary club are funding their trip to London.

    Rail passengers are being warned they could face a £100 fine if they travel without a ticket once a new penalty fares system comes into force, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    Train operator Northern says it will issue on-the-spot fines of £100 to any customers travelling without a valid pass once ticket machines have been installed at all stations in the area.

    The company has intermittently cracked down on fare-dodging in recent years but the efforts have been undermined by an absence of ticket facilities at smaller stations.

    Northern says the rollout of the scheme on the Leeds-Ilkley line this year has been successful.

    But rail passenger representative David Young said: "It seems unfair to me that people have to make their way to the wrong platform to get a ticket."

    Pacific Coast Highway And Santa Monica, inspired by the Bradford artist's daily drive to his studio, is estimated to fetch up to £22m when it goes under the hammer for the first time.

    The large-scale oil painting, dating from 1990 is one of the highlights of Sotheby's Contemporary Art Evening sale in New York.

    The current record for a Hockney work dates from 2016, with Woldgate Woods, an autumnal scene in East Yorkshire, which sold for £9.4m.

    A young pupil has been excluded from a school in Sheffield after taking a knife on to the premises.

    Intake Primary School has written to parents telling them that staff confiscated the knife on Wednesday.

    The Year 6 pupil has been given a fixed-term exclusion and the police have been informed.

    The school's headteacher says she'll be asking officers to speak to all pupils about the dangers of carrying knives.

    Creditors for the flooring retailer, Carpetright, have approved its plan to close 81 shops - with the loss of about 300 jobs.

    It will also reduce the rent at 100 other stores.

    I've been getting a sneak peak this morning, of a cloud of collected rain water and a nine-metre high exotic bird called Polly, that you can climb inside.

    The two are part of the newest outdoor artworks at Fountains Abbey, near Ripon in North Yorkshire.

    They're at Studley Royal Water Gardens and from tomorrow they're open to the public.

    Armed officers in Dewsbury have arrested a man this morning after he was seen brandishing a suspected imitation firearm.

    The officers were deployed at 07:20 to Halifax Road in Staincliffe.

    It's alleged the man was hitting cars with a piece of pipe and had a suspected imitation firearm.

    No one was injured during the incident and a man has been arrested.

    Police are keen to trace 25 year-old Georgina Davies who went missing this week.

    She was last seen on Monday in the Hyde Park area of the town.

    Police say she has a distinctive facial scar and they're urging anyone who's seen her to get in touch.

  19. Leeds pupils bring happiness for dementia patientspublished at 10:54 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

    A group of inner city school children are being recognised for their dementia awareness work in North Yorkshire.

    They're from a school in Leeds and have been travelling to meet people at The Hall, a residential home in Thornton-le-Dale, near Pickering.

    Fiona Andrews, from the charity Dementia Forward, which helped bring the two groups together says they chose the care home because: "Its residents were unlikely to have experienced much interaction with children".
