    A man's died after a crash in Wakefield.

    Police say the 21-year-old seems to have lost control outside a pub on Hell Lane, near New Sharlston, last night.

    His passenger suffered minor injuries.

  4. Boss of Yorkshire Post publisher quitspublished at 09:02 British Summer Time 1 May 2018

    The boss of the company which owns the Yorkshire Post has resigned from his post for "family reasons", it's been announced.

    Johnston Press, which also runs titles such as The Scotsman, says Ashley Highfield has agreed with the board that he won't put himself up for re-election next month.

    In a statement, the publisher says: "Ashley is leaving for family reasons and in order to fulfill his plans to transition to be a 'plural' non-executive director as the next phase of his career."

    Mr Highfield, who formerly worked at the BBC, has been at the helm of Johnston Press since 2011 and spearheaded the acquisition of the i newspaper.

    Johnston Press chairman Camilla Rhodes said: "I would like to thank Ashley for his significant contribution. We're sorry he felt his personal circumstances required a change at this time."

    Firefighters say they're having to deal with a white goods blaze every fortnight in North Yorkshire.

    Tumble dryers, fridges and freezers are among the items of household equipment which are at risk of fire.

    North Yorkshire Fire Service has now launched a new campaign to highlight their dangers.

    A family from York whose home was destroyed after a driver crashed into it say their lives have been "devastated".

    David and Claire Garnett were watching TV in the lounge of their house in Rawcliffe and their youngest son was in bed when the car ploughed into their house last September.

    Mr Garnett, 54, suffered multiple injuries after being buried under the rubble while Mrs Garnett suffered back and neck injuries.

    James Andrew Sparham, 29, of Geldof Road in Huntington, York, was jailed for five years yesterday after pleading guilty at York Crown Court to three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and criminal damage.

    In a statement, the Garnetts said their lives had been shattered.

    "The one place anyone should always be able to feel safe is within the four walls of your own home," they sayd.

    The Garnetts thanked the emergency services and community for their "tremendous" support as well as medical teams in York and Leeds.

  7. Series of Rotherham store burglaries 'linked'published at 08:00 British Summer Time 1 May 2018

    Several burglaries in Rotherham last week which saw the theft of over £20,000 worth of cigarettes and alcohol are believed to be "linked", according to South Yorkshire Police.

    The McColls stores on Worksop Road and Fleming Way were targeted by four men in the early hours of Tuesday 24 May.

    The Londis supermarket on Rotherham Road in Maltby was then burgled at about 12:30 on Wednesday 25 April.

    Finally, on the same morning, two men are thought to have broken into the Premier Stores at Thrybergh (pictured) and Maltby.

    Alcohol, cash, cigarettes, e-cigarettes and e-cigarette liquids were stolen in the five burglaries.

    Det Con Jamie Crawford says: "We believe these incidents are very likely to be linked and need your help in bringing these men to justice."

  8. Yorkshire mums back home after 'emotional' desert marathonpublished at 07:49 British Summer Time 1 May 2018

    A couple of North Yorkshire mums are back from Morocco after completing a desert ultramarathon, crossing the finish line hand-in-hand.

    Niki Doeg and Frances Davies took part in the Marathon des Sables in the Sahara Desert, which is described as "the toughest foot race in the world".

    The course is approximately the distance of six regular marathons and Niki says her feet were so badly blistered they looked like those of an Egyptian mummy.

    Frances added: "Mid-way through each day I would find myself with tears coming down, just at the sheer enormity.

    "The landscape makes you think more about the meaning of life and why we're all here. It's an emotional journey."

    Niki and Frances took on the endurance challenge to raise money for cancer charity Maggie's Centre.

    In 2016, the pair were part of a team of women who successfully rowed across the Atlantic, becoming the oldest all-female crew to do so.

    Steel firm Liberty House Group says production was up 63% in the course of the last year since it took over two speciality plants from Tata in South Yorkshire.

    Company boss John Bolton says its production of high grade steels rose from 179,000 tonnes a year in 2016-17 to 292,000 tonnes in 2017-18.

    The firm, which has two plants at Rotherham and Stocksbridge, says it's aiming to reach output of more than one million tonnes a year by 2020.

    Companies which supply products to Leeds-based Asda and Sainsbury fear they could be hit hard if the proposed merger of the two major grocery chains goes ahead.

    Sainsbury's boss Mike Coupe has pledged to cut prices on everyday products by about 10% after the deal.

    But suppliers have said they fear they will have to shoulder the cost of those savings.

    The final decision over the merger will be made by the Competition and Markets Authority.

    Meanwhile, Leeds City Council says it has been told Asda's HQ will stay in the city.

    People living in a part of North Yorkshire are being told to look out for a scam which sees the perpetrators claim to be from a council telling them they can save money.

    Craven District Council says if you receive a call claiming to be from them, with the caller saying they can reduce what you pay, it's nothing to do with them.

    It says if you do inadvertently give out any bank or card details, to get in touch with your bank to put a stop on payments.

    The A655 Black Road in Wakefield is currently closed in both directions due to a serious accident between A638 Doncaster Road and Wakefield Road.
