  2. Listen: Whitby lifeboat operating normally - RNLIpublished at 12:48 British Summer Time 3 May 2018

    The RNLI has denied crew levels on the Whitby Lifeboat have dropped dangerously low after about several members either stood down or resigned.

    Four lifeboat volunteers have now quit over the suspension of two others following a row over what the RNLI calls "inappropriate material of a sexual nature".

    The charity says it has carried out an investigation and the crew members have a right to appeal.

  4. 'Sadistic, deceitful' killer jailed for lifepublished at 12:30 British Summer Time 3 May 2018

    Ataul Mustafa has been jailed for life with a minimum term of 33 years for murdering his partner Sohbia Khan, from Bradford, at their home last year.

    Mustafa was found guilty on Tuesday of murdering his 37-year-old partner Sohbia Khan a few weeks after she moved into his home in Normanton, Derby, last year.

    Derby Crown Court heard the 36-year-old subjected his victim to "domestic violence on a savage scale" before her death in May 2017.

    The jury was told Ms Khan was found to have suffered 36 recent injuries across her body, including burns from an iron.

    After the murder, Mustafa showed her dead body to members of his own family - who alerted authorities.

    Sentencing Mustafa, the judge described him as a "sadistic, deceitful, dangerous man where woman are concerned".

  10. £1.2m council cash to reduce bed blockingpublished at 11:46 British Summer Time 3 May 2018

    Over £1m is to be spent by City of York Council in a bid to try and help to reduce bed-blocking at York hospital, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    Figures show that rates of Delayed Transfers of Care have fallen significantly since December, when they peaked at more than a 1,000 days of hospital care lost in a month.

    That had fallen to just over 700 by February.

    The council's ruling executive will be asked to release £800,000 which was already agreed through the budget in February, and add £457,000 of government money to support health and care systems which should help to reduce bed-blocking.

    Councillor Carol Runciman says the health and social care system is facing challenges because of an ageing population and that additional money will be used to provide things such extra home care for people leaving hospital.

    The council is also looking at introducing a "home share" project which would give people reduced rent in return for helping housemates who need low level support.

    The crowds of yellow and blue are out in force in Beverley to enjoy day one of the Tour de Yorkshire.

    Last year, organisers decided to add an extra day to the tour which has attracted some big names from the cycling world.

  14. Petition to reinstate Whitby lifeboat men taken downpublished at 10:57 British Summer Time 3 May 2018

    An online petition calling for two suspended members of an RNLI crew in Whitby to be given their jobs back has been taken down.

    The petition was set up on 38 Degrees, the not-for-profit political activism organisation.

    The site says: "The petition has been disabled because of inappropriate content".

    The RNLI has launched an investigation into the "production of inappropriate material of a sexual nature".

    Three other crew members have also resigned from the Whitby lifeboat station.

    Hambleton District Council has made special arrangements to fit both events in the town.

    These very cute baby lemurs are about to meet the public at Yorkshire Wildlife Park:

    The babies actually weigh less than 100g and are carried on their mother’s chest for the first two weeks before being carried on their back.

    The park, near Doncaster, says you might be able to catch a glimpse of them over the bank holiday weekend as they venture out for the first time.

    John Minion, from Yorkshire Wildlife park, said: "The lemurs are great fun and I’m sure the new additions will fit in and continue delighting visitors."

    A veterinary plastic surgeon has praised the international effort to save a pony targeted by a suspected acid attacker.

    Jamie Peyton travelled from California to Malton's Rainbow Equine Centre to help with pioneering surgery involving fish skin.

    The pony, Cinders, suffered critical injuries after she was attacked and dumped in Chesterfield eight days ago.
